Who Won The Masters In 2008

The 2008 Masters was won by South African Trevor Immelman and turned out to be his final victory on the PGA Tour. This was the 72nd time The Masters was played, and another South African set a record for most appearances in this major.

Winner: Trevor Immelman, 280

Where it was played: Augusta National Golf Club, Augusta, Georgia

Tournament dates: April 10-13, 2008

Leader after first round: Trevor Immelman and Justin Rose, 68

Leader after second round: Trevor Immelman, 136

Leader after third round: Trevor Immelman, 205

What Happened in the 2008 Masters Tournament

Trevor Immelman went wire-to-wire to win the 2008 Masters Tournament. He shared the first-round lead with Justin Rose, then led outright after each of the next three rounds.

Brandt Snedeker was Immelman’s closest pursuer through the middle two rounds, trailing by one stroke after the second round and by two strokes following the third round. But playing in the final pairing with Immelman on a blustery Sunday, Snedeker shot 77 to fall back.

Tiger Woods began the final round six strokes behind Immelman, and made up some ground as Immelman closed with a 75, but Woods wound up second, three strokes behind.

Immelman had only one previous win on the PGA Tour at the time of his victory here. And he had finished in the Top 10 in a major only once previously. He was 27 years old at the time and considered a player of great promise, but injuries soon derailed his career and he never won again on the PGA Tour.

The 2008 Masters was significant for another South African, too. Gary Player played The Masters for the 51st time, setting a record for most appearances as a player in this major championship (a record he had shared with Arnold Palmer). Not surprisingly, Player, 73 years old, missed the cut.

It was something of a surprise when 1992 Masters champ Fred Couples missed the cut, however. Couples had made 23 consecutive Masters cuts, the tournament record — one he shared with Player. But that streak ended here.

Ian Woosnam, 1991 Masters champ, made the cut in this tournament for the last time this year.
