While the first Extraction movie found Chris Hemsworth kicking ass and taking names in South Asia, Extraction 2, which is now streaming on Netflix, sends Tyler Rake north, to the freezing cold.

Directed by Sam Hargrove, with a script by Joe Russo, Extraction 2 sees the return of Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, who is not, in fact, dead. He’s fine! And he’s ready to get back to extracting people. This time, Tyler’s mission is to rescue a Georgian woman and her two children from prison, where they are being held hostage by their abusive, mafia boss father.

That said, Extraction 2 didn’t actually film its jaw-dropping action sequences in the country of Georgia. But neither did it film in a Hollywood basement. Read on to learn all about the Extraction 2 filming locations for the new Chris Hemsworth action movie.

Extraction 2 was filmed mainly in the Czech Republic—in Prague and the surrounding area—as well as additional shoots in Vienna, Austria, in January and February of 2022.

Filming was originally meant to take place in Australia, but renewed COVID protocols forced the production to relocate. In an interview with Decider, director Sam Hargrave recalled the relocation as one of the most challenging things about the productions. “We’d been persevering, trying to push through all the COVID restrictions,” Hargrave said. “When I got the call, we were in the middle of rehearsing. We’d found a prison—all the locations in Australia for this oner—and it all fit really nice. We’d spent months working on it.”

But eventually, it became clear the production would have to relocate. The 21-minute “oner” would now be filmed in Prague. “When we arrived in Prague and had 12 weeks to prep the whole movie, we were kind of under the gun—we had like half the amount of usual time to do it,” Hargrave said. “I had this notion of how it worked in Australia, and I found myself going like, ‘If we just have this like we had back there!’ So the lesson for me was letting go of that preconceived notion of what it should be, and just accept what it is now. It’s different place, you’re gonna have to split it up between three different locations. The prison is different. It’s just the way it is.”

The prison break scene was filmed in two locations. The interior was filmed at Mladá Boleslav Jail in the Czech Republic, a former working prison that is now used exclusively for movie shoots, including Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. The exterior courtyard riot was filmed at an 18th-century grain storage facility. And yes, it really was snowing when the production filmed that epic fight. “It was really snowing, below zero temperatures,” Hargrave said. Both the car chase and the exteriors of the train fight were filmed in similarly freezing temperatures, in locations near Prague in the Czech Republic.

The fight that comes about halfway through the film—when the Nagazi attack Tyler and his team at the safe house, thanks to a tip from Sandro—was filmed at the DC Tower Complex in Vienna, which is the tallest skyscraper in Austria. According to the Extraction 2 production notes, “Hargrave initially considered having Hemsworth perform a stunt dangling from a crane on the 53rd floor of the DC Tower, but wind conditions in the winter in Vienna weren’t ideal.”
