Which Is Easier To Read Niv Or Nlt

Many people say that there is not much difference in the Bible translations, and that it doesn’t matter which one you use as long as you are a believer in Christ.

Origin

NLT

The New Living Translation is a translation of the Hebrew Bible into the modern English language. It was first introduced in 1996.

NIV

The New International Version was originally introduced in 1973.

Readability

NLT

The New Living Translation is extremely easy to read. It is one of the easiest to read for English speaking people all over the world.

NIV

At the time of it’s creation, many scholars felt like the KJV translation didn’t fully resonate with the speakers of modern English. So they sought to create an easy to understand translation.

Bible translation differences

NLT

The philosophy in translation used for the New Living Translation is ‘thought for thought’ rather than word for word. Many Biblical scholars will go so far as to say that this is not even a translation but more of a paraphrasing of the original text to make it easier to understand.

NIV

The NIV tries to balance out between thought for thought and word for word. Their goal was to have the “soul as well as the structure” of the original texts. The NIV is an original translation, meaning the scholars started from scratch with the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts.

Romans 8:9 “But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)” (Sin Bible verses)

Target Audience

Both the NLT and the NIV has a general English-speaking populace as their target audience. Children as well as adults would benefit from the readability of these translations.

Popularity

NLT is enormously popular in sales, but it does not sell as many copies as the NIV.

NIV is consistently one of the top bestselling translations in the entire world.

Pros and cons of both

NLT comes across as a beautiful and simplified version. It is an easy to understand paraphrasing. This can be helpful when reading to young children, but it does not make for a good indepth study Bible.

NIV is an easy to understand version that still renders true to the original text. It may not be as accurate as some of the other translations but it is trustworthy nonetheless.
