Why Won’t My Steering Wheel Turn

When the Wheel Won’t Work: 5 Reasons Your Steering Wheel Might Be Giving You Trouble

You get in your car to leave for the day only to find that your steering wheel won’t work! This is a frustrating problem, but what causes it? There are a few different reasons why your steering wheel might be giving you trouble. Keep reading for a closer look at what causes steering wheel issues.

1. Power Steering Pump Failure.

The power steering pump is responsible for allowing you to turn your steering wheel smoothly by providing the proper amount of pressure. If this component ever stops working, then it will become much more difficult to turn your steering wheel. This might mean that a piece has come loose and needs to be tightened, or it might mean that the pump needs to be replaced.

2. Improper Tire Pressure.

Your tire pressure affects more than just the tires! Improper tire pressure can make it more difficult to turn the steering wheel, especially when the tire pressure is too low. This is one reason why it’s important to check your tire pressure regularly and adjust as needed.

3. Power Steering Fluid Issue.

Cars rely on power steering fluid to enable drivers to smoothly and easily turn the wheel as needed while driving. Low power steering fluid is one of the most common causes of steering wheel issues, so it’s a good idea to have this fluid level checked regularly.

4. Steering Rack Problems.

There are different shafts and joints that connect the steering rack to the wheel. Daily driving can cause stress on these shafts and joints, making it easy for them to wear down over time. When this happens, the steering wheel might feel stiff when you first get in the car but then work normally as you drive. That doesn’t mean this issue should be ignored, though, so make sure you contact an auto repair specialist.

5. Serpentine Belt Damage.

If you’re driving, then your serpentine belt is in use. Because this part is used so often, it’s easy for it to get damaged. This type of damage can make it more difficult to turn the steering wheel, which is why the belt should be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
