Iowa State is all but guaranteed a high seed in next month’s postseason thanks to a 21-6 record and strong rankings in the NCAA Tournament committee’s metrics. As of Tuesday morning, ISU also has the inside track on a bid to Omaha — the closest of the eight locations for first- and second-round games.

Iowa State’s 1-1 record last week didn’t lead to much movement for the Cyclones in the latest projections. Other teams around the Cyclones did move around, however.

Iowa State was a projected No. 3 seed last week by most of the dozens of brackets tracked by Bracket Matrix. The Cyclones had an average seed of 2.87, nearly identical to its 2.94 average as of Tuesday morning. Iowa State is the highest No. 3 seed — in other words, the No. 9 overall team — by average.

How can Iowa State play in Omaha for the NCAA Tournament?

First- and second-round host cities are not tied to regions or seed numbers; instead, the top 16 teams (every team seeded No. 1 through No. 4 in the final bracket) are numbered off, with the best remaining team assigned to the nearest available site. Each of the eight locations will host two of the top 16 teams.

For Iowa State to get to Omaha, this means the Cyclones cannot finish behind multiple teams that also have Omaha as their closest location. Most notably, that would include Kansas (a consensus No. 2 seed as of Tuesday).

Additionally, Omaha is the second-closest site for some other teams in the same range as the Cyclones, such as Marquette and Baylor. If those teams finish ahead of Iowa State on the final seed list, they may get sent to Omaha if their first choice — Memphis for Baylor, Indianapolis for Marquette — have already taken two teams among the top 16.

Omaha is also the third option for Illinois, currently a No. 4 seed by Bracket Matrix. The Illini could potentially move up if they win at Wisconsin and vs. Purdue in the final two weeks of the regular season.
