You are viewing: What Is The Towing Capacity Of A Ford Explorer
When shopping for 3-row SUVs, there are a couple of traits you expect such as power and capability. The model has to be able to lug your entire family on long road trips and sometimes, you may even want to attach a trailer to the rear. If towing is important to you, the towing capacity of the Ford Explorer is right up your alley.
No matter where you’re travelling around West Point, King William, and Williamsburg, the Ford Explorer can effortlessly bring along a trailer or camper. Towing is even easier when you let our technicians at West Point Ford equip the specific towing package!
What’s the Towing Capacity of the Ford Explorer?
The Ford Explorer’s maximum towing capacity is 5,600 pounds and comes from the 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 engine. If you instead opt for the 2.3L EcoBoost® 4-cylinder motor, your SUV will have a maximum towing capacity of 5,300 pounds.
Finally, the 3.3L Hybrid V6 results in a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. While the towing capacity of the Ford Explorer is immense, the base curb weight is a nimble 4,345 pounds.

Choosing from one of the 3 available engines in the Ford Explorer does more than just alter the towing capability. Traits such as horsepower and torque are also subject to change depending on the performance configurations you select.
The 2.3L 4-cylinder engine is able to generate 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Conversely, the 3.0L V6 generates 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.
The transmission is standard across the board. Thankfully, the 10-speed speed automatic is intelligent, smoothly shifting gears whether you’re accelerating onto a highway or decelerating down the off ramp.
You can also select between a rear-wheel drive platform or the available Intelligent 4-Wheel drive setup. Both provide reassuring traction on slick roads or dirt trails.
Trailer Tow Package – Class III
To further improve the towing capability of the Ford Explorer, you can select the Class III Trailer Tow Package. While the standard Explorer is plenty capable of hauling a trailer, the trailer-specific package provides a number of helpful upgrades.
A Class III frame mounted hitch will be installed on the back of the SUV. Trailer connectors and an engine oil cooler will be introduced, too. Finally, the cargo management system makes it easier to store supplies when you and your family depart on a long weekend trip.
