The best places to see snow in Australia in 2023

Mount Hotham (Victoria)

If you’re a skier on the hunt for crisp white snowfields, look no further than Mount Hotham. Located in the Victorian Alps, Mount Hotham is widely considered the home of the best skiing in Australia. If you’re not quite up to skiing, they also offer tobogganing and snowboarding, as well as general winter fun (such as snowball fights!).

The snow season usually falls between June and early October; during this time all visitors are required to pay a resort entry fee. You can come for a day or stay a few nights as there are plenty of accommodation options. While the accommodation can be a bit expensive (especially during peak season), it’s made more affordable when you split the cost with a group of friends. From apartments to lodges to chalets, you’re sure to find the perfect place for your next winter getaway.

Ben Lomond National Park (Tasmania)

Ben Lomond National Park is one of Tasmania’s most iconic sights. It’s the main destination for skiing and snowboarding in Tasmania, but also offers incredible views and walking tracks. If spotting wildlife is something you’re interested in, then you’re in luck! You’re sure to see wallabies, forester kangaroos, wombats and pademelons (even in heavy snowfall!). Ben Lomond National Park is roughly one hour and 40 minutes by car from Launceston and approximately a three-hour drive from Hobart.

Kosciuszko National Park/Thredbo-Perisher region (NSW)

Home to Australia’s tallest inland mountain, Mount Kosciuszko, Kosciuszko National Park is the ideal destination to see snow in Australia in 2022. The park is also very close to the Thredbo-Perisher area, another renowned region for snow sports of all kinds. Here, you’ll find some of the best skiing in Australia, along with ski resorts, alpine hikes and much more.

kunanyi/Mount Wellington (Tasmania)

Towering over the city of Hobart, kunanyi/Mount Wellington might be Tasmania’s most recognised landmark. The mountain usually gets a lot of snow throughout the winter season, making it the perfect place for snow activities. Plus, if you’re on the hunt for breathtaking views, this is the spot for you. In heavy snowfall, the pinnacle of the mountain is often closed, but you can typically climb at least part of the way up and walk to the snow.

Blue Mountains (NSW)

There’s plenty of snow to see in the Blue Mountains. Wentworth Falls takes the cake for the most picturesque snowfall – with its beautiful gardens and cottages, it quickly becomes a winter wonderland. That said, Katoomba is probably where you’re likely to find the most snow as well as some great hills for toboganning.

Corin Forest Mountain Resort (ACT)

Corin Forest Mountain Resort prides itself on being the most affordable and accessible alpine resort in Australia. It usually snows roughly six times per year at the resort. Worried about missing one of those days? Don’t stress! For the rest of the winter, they use snow guns to simulate snowfall. There’s a designated snow play area for tobogganing, snowball fights, snowman-building, skiing lessons, snowfields for more advanced skiers and the iconic Alpine Slide!

Bluff Knoll (Western Australia)

One of the only places to see snow in Western Australia is Bluff Knoll. Located in the Stirling Range National Park, it’s roughly a four-and-a-half-hour drive south of Perth. Snowfall only happens a couple of times a year on Bluff Knoll, and it tends to get pretty busy when it does. Keep your eyes on the forecast so you know when to go!
