Who Ever Loved That Loved At First Sight

“Who Ever Lov’d, that Lov’d Not at First Sight” by Christopher Marlowe is a 16th century poem in which the Marlowe attempts to justify the notion that love at first sight is the only kind of true love. In his poem Marlowe attempts to justify this idea by describing how most love unfolds and the effects it has on the people involved. Marlowe begins his poem by claiming that people have no power of the universe saying, “For will in us is over-rul’d by fate.” This is Marlowe’s way of saying that fate trumps all. This means that if a person were to enter a relationship without being in love at first sight the universe would keep them from being happy. He goes on to claim that relationships that are not condoned by the universe eventually fall into conflict and chaos writing, “We wish that one should lose, the other win;” Marlowe is telling the reader that when a love develops over time it will eventually turn into a completion with one winner and one loser. This quote furthers the idea that the universe is tearing people apart that it did not put together in the first place. Marlow then goes on to say to the reader that when love falls apart it is often not seen or understood saying, “The reason no man knows; let it suffice, What we behold is censur’d by our eyes.” Marlowe is supporting his idea of love being controlled by the universe because when the man made love is ending, the people are not able to see or understand it. When the love was not true to begin with fate intervenes and ends things without the people understanding how or why. At the end of his poem Marlowe concludes with “Where both deliberate, the love is slight: Who ever lov’d, that lov’d not at first sight.” Marlowe concludes by telling the reader that intentional love is not true love, only love at first sight is true. Marlowe’s powerful poem is telling readers that love is not an undertaking or a journey that you take on, but spontaneous event that springs upon a person.
