Welcome to the Ending Explained for Rise of Empires: Ottoman Mehmed Vs. Vlad. The Netflix series comes with a second season that finally finishes the conflict between Sultan Mehmed of the Ottoman Empire and the Wallachian ruler Vlad Dracula. Vlad, of course, would be remembered to this day thanks to the famous novel written by Bran Stoker. The season concludes the story of these two important historic figures and gives us a nice glimpse into the history of this side of the world.
Rise of Empires: Ottoman Mehmed Vs. Vlad continues to push its hybrid combination of a normal drama series and a historical documentary. The combination is certainly unique, but it leaves the show in a sort of limbo, as both aspects of the show feel way undercooked and none of them receive the sufficient attention and development they deserve. The drama ends up feeling shallow, with some very bad acting on display. The documentary side of things also feels shallow, with the experts adding nothing to the story and at times just describing what we already saw seconds before.

Is Vlad Successful In Killing The Sultan, Mehmed?

The final episode of the season finally shows us the culmination of every single storyline up to this moment. We see how Vlad attacks the encampment where Mehmed has been posted during the entire conflict. This is a desperate attempt by Vlad, who surely feels outmatched at every single step of this war. The result is Vlad trying to cut the head off the snake and, by doing so, ending the war in one single stroke. The battle is bloody and ferocious. We see countless soldiers on both sides dying.
Vlad also comes face to face with his brother Radu, who is loyal to Mehmed. The scene, and the way the experts give context to the moment, make it feel like a classical example of the conflict that could exist between brothers in the high houses. Radu knows that Vlad is defeated, and he knows that Mehmed is his best choice, not only for surviving but also to be rewarded for his loyalty. Following his brother in his rebellion doesn’t win him much. And so, the two brothers battle, but Vlad flees before Radu and some other soldiers can overwhelm him.
The same happens when Vlad comes face-to-face with Mehmed. The Sultan himself jumps into the fray and battles Vlad in an epic sword fight. However, Vlad once again manages to escape the grip of death. Vlad leaves with a few soldiers under his banner. His attacks as resulted in many deaths for the Ottomans, but a certain defeat for Wallachia. Vlad has failed to kill the Sultan, and so he decides to kill every single member of the Ottoman Empire that still resides in Targoviste, one of the most important cities in Wallachia.
Vlad impales countless enemies, in the way that made him famous to this day with the moniker of “The Impaler”. Mehmed is horrified by the hellish sight and promises to find Vlad and kill him for his sins. Vlad becomes a man on the run, but he still has followers, and many soldiers keep following him around.
What Happens With Mehmed and Vlad In The End?

Mehmed explains to Radu how he was able to predict Vlad’s attack and compares himself to Alexander and Darius, terrible rivals during the infamous Alexander campaign to conquer the world. Mehmed turns to Radu and basically places him on the throne of Wallachia. Now, Mehmed has consolidated his position on this frontier of his empire. Radu ends up becoming a ruler who will serve for many years and who will maintain Ottoman control over the realm for more than 400 years into the future.
At the palace in Constantinople, the queen and the rest of the court finish purging the final spies at Vlad’s service. It is all very gruesome, but it needs to be done. The Sultan cannot allow spies to just run free around the palace. The ones that are caught claim their loyalty is only to the Sultan, but not even their cooperation in finding the rest of the traitors will save them from having their heads cut.
Mehmed becomes obsessed with finding and killing Vlad, but finally, many years later, Vlad is captured in Constantinople. Vlad’s rebellion has failed, and in the end, he has been served with the same punishment he delivered to so many others. His head is cut off and impaled for everyone in the city to see. It is a gruesome image, but with it, Mehmed sent a message to all of his enemies. The message worked and allowed the empire to remain instant for hundreds of years.
The season does a very good job of depicting the most action-packed parts of the story, but the end of the story feels very rushed. We never see how Vlad was captured, we just jump straight to his head being impaled as Mehmed watches it rot. Maybe one more episode to see the end of the story properly would have helped the season feel more impactful and complete.
