PEARL, Miss.-Tomorrow is July 4th and if you’re still looking to grab watermelon for your family cookout, you may be in luck.

WJTV’s News Channel 12’s Lucy Dieckhaus spoke to a local business about their watermelon sales during the holiday weekend.

Amanda and Todd Allen are proud to sell Smith County watermelons.

“Smith County watermelons were grown when people grew things in a way that was for the quality and the taste,” said Todd Allen.

Todd said some shops are disguising Florida watermelons as Mississippi grown.

But the Director of the Mississippi Watermelon Festival Terresa Stewart said she hasn’t seen anyone pass off an out-of-state watermelon as a Smith County one, but she wouldn’t doubt it because of the high quality of the watermelons.

“There’s a lot of places you can buy a Smith County watermelons, but I assure you these are real, authentic Smith County watermelons, and there is a difference,” said Todd.

Here at Magnolia Roots, they have mounds of watermelons to choose from. You have either your Smith County watermelons or your Florida watermelons.

And Amanda says you can spot a Smith County watermelon because it’s usually much larger.

“Size does matter when it comes to a Florida watermelon and a Smith County watermelon,” said Amanda.

Like many other Mississippi families the Allens said, they enjoy the sweet treat this time every year.

“Our family has always ate them around the 4th, so it is a family tradition for our home,” Amanda said.

However, 9-year-old Ashton says he would rather grab a Florida watermelon slice.

“I like the Florida ones,” said Ashton.

Customer Beth Bivens said the taste makes the local watermelons stand out.

“They’re just really sweet, and they’re just delicious. They’re just the best. They’re fresh,” said Bivens.

But local or not, Todd said at least for their store-they have plenty of watermelons to go around.

“There is no shortage of watermelons out here. Most of my family is from Smith County, and we know where to acquire watermelons,” said Todd.

The Director of the Mississippi Watermelon Festival Terresa Stewart said although she doesn’t grow any watermelons, she has heard the secret to the Simpson County watermelons is in the soil.
