How Much Do 16 Oz Gloves Hurt

When it comes to boxing training, the right type of gloves makes all the difference for a successful workout.

Newbies to the sport often wonder what type and size of boxing gloves they should go for, to help them get the most out of their boxing session.

Have you ever wondered, should I use 14 or 16 oz boxing gloves? Well, we will outline the difference between the two in this article, which we hope helps you decide on which gloves to choose.

How do you know what size boxing gloves you need?

So, boxing gloves are not actually measured in sizes ranging from small to extra large.

Rather, boxing gloves are measured by weight, usually in ounces.

For example, for a 16 oz pair of gloves, each glove will weigh 16 ounces.

To work out which type of boxing gloves you need, read this handy chart below:

4 oz For children aged 4 to 5 years old. 6 oz For children aged 5 to 7 years old. 8 oz For children aged 7 to early teens. 10 oz Thinly padded glove, ideal for light pad work. 12 oz Slightly more padding, good for pad work & bag work. 14 oz An all-round training glove, good for pad work, bag work and light sparring. 16 oz A protective glove, good for pad work, bag work and hard sparring.

If the glove you choose is too tight, then size up. Or if it’s too roomy, then size down.

What is the difference between 14 oz and 16 oz boxing gloves?

Well, the 16 oz gloves are two ounces heavier, with more padding. So, they offer great protection to the hands, as well as for your sparring partner’s safety. However, because the 16 oz glove is weightier, it will tire your arms faster than the 14 oz glove.

14 oz gloves are known as an ‘all-rounder’ training glove, because they are excellent for sparring and hitting focus pads.

So, “should I use 14 or 16 oz boxing gloves?”, we hear you ask.

Well, 16 oz gloves are one of the largest boxing gloves available, commonly used by experienced and heavyweight boxers. They are not a starter glove, which is why would advise beginners to use 10 or 12 oz gloves instead.

If you weigh more than 84kg, and you have a hand circumference of more than 8.5 to 9.5 inches, then we recommend using 16 oz gloves.

To measure your hand circumference, wrap a piece of string around the palm of your hand. Then, measure the length of the string, which will give you your hand circumference.

As for 14 oz gloves, these are ideal for boxing practice, sparring, and for working your way up to a heavier glove.

If you can’t decide between 14 oz and 16 oz gloves, we would always recommend starting with 14 oz gloves, so that you can upgrade to a 16 oz glove at a later stage when you are more confident with boxing.

How do I choose the right type of boxing gloves?

  • Your gloves should fit comfortably over your hands.
  • They should provide adequate support for your knuckles and wrists, no matter how hard you punch.
  • The gloves shouldn’t slip off when you are boxing.
  • The gloves shouldn’t feel tight and restrictive or cut off your circulation.
  • There should be good ventilation.
  • If there is a Velcro strap, it should be long-lasting.
  • The gloves shouldn’t feel too bulky.

Do heavier boxing gloves hurt more?

Contrary to what you might think, a heavier glove won’t always hurt more. A heavier boxing glove, which weighs 16oz, will fatigue the boxer faster, as it is more weighty.

Whereas, with a lightweight boxing glove, which weighs around 10oz, you actually have an increased risk of injury.

If you want to hit harder, you don’t need to size up your sparring gloves- you just need to work on other areas such as your techniques and positioning.

Can I use MMA gloves for boxing?

No, you must never use MMA gloves for boxing- whether that’s on a punchbag, punch pads or a boxing dummy (body opponent bag). You could severely damage your knuckles, wrists and wrists, and seriously injure your opponent if wear MMA gloves while boxing.

That is because MMA gloves are small, lightweight and open-fingered, which allow the fighter to grab and grapple their opponent.

MMA gloves have thinner padding than boxing gloves, so they won’t absorb punches as easily. Some MMA gloves do not come with longer wrist straps, so you won’t have that wrist support needed for boxing training.

Can you punch a punchbag with just hand wraps?

Yes, you can punch a heavy bag with just hand wraps. Hand wraps protect your wrist, knuckles and thumb. They also help reduce the fatigue that comes with a strong punch.

So, warming up with some light bag work, while only wearing hand wraps, is perfectly fine.

Don’t be tempted to skip the hand wraps altogether and start punching the bag with your bare fists. This could cause severe aches in your hands and even serious hand injuries. You might end up using the incorrect form, which will throw you off.

If you can’t be bothered to spend five minutes wrapping your hands, do some shadowboxing in front of a mirror instead.

How do I stay safe when boxing?

Follow our advice below, to keep yourself safe during your boxing workout:

  • Never hit a punch bag with bare fists. Always wear boxing gloves, which are the correct size for their hands.
  • Equip yourself with the correct protective gear. Wearing headgear, hand wraps, arm pads, and shin pads greatly reduces the risk of cuts, bruises and injuries.
  • Take regular rest breaks and stop boxing when they get tired. Make sure you do not overtrain, as too much exercise could lead to exhaustion, injuries and stress fractures.
  • Hydrate with plenty of water throughout and after your boxing training session.
  • If you have a dedicated boxing space in your house, remove any hazards in the environment before you start boxing. E.g. you could trip over skipping ropes on the floor. Or the punch bag could swing and accidentally smash into a glass cabinet.
