Jeep is known for manufacturing incredibly robust and long-lasting vehicles. While there’s no doubt they’re capable of navigating both paved routes and the roughest off-road terrain, you may wonder whether these vehicles are gas guzzlers. In this article, we’ll discuss whether jeeps are good on gas and find out which models offer good fuel economy.

Are Jeeps Fuel Efficient?
There’s no denying that Jeep has produced a lot of fuel-efficient vehicles. While some models with larger engines perform poorly in terms of fuel management, some new and smaller models perform admirably.
You can’t generalize a ride’s fuel economy based on the manufacturer alone. Reviewing its fuel efficiency ratings is the best way to know if a certain Jeep model is indeed fuel efficient.
How Is A Vehicle’s Gas Mileage Measured?
A vehicle’s fuel economy is usually measured by MPG (miles per gallon). This rating refers to the number of miles a vehicle can go on one gallon of fuel. The higher its MPG, the more fuel-efficient the vehicle is.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or EPA is in charge of approving a vehicle’s MPG ratings. Here are the three types of given by the agency:
Highway MPG
This MPG rating refers to the average distance a car can get when traveling on an open road or highway without any interruption (stopping or starting). This is usually measured at higher speeds.
City MPG
This refers to the rating when traveling on a city road with many stops and starts in between. This is usually measured at a lower speed.
Combined MPG
This rating is a weighted average of the city and highway MPG values, calculated by multiplying the city value by 55% and the highway value by 45%. The combined MPG value is mostly used for quick and easy comparison across vehicles.
What Is MPGe?
Unlike a gas car’s MPG, which can be calculated using a simple formula, the fuel efficiency rating of a hybrid Jeep can be complicated because it also relies on electricity to power the vehicle.
That is why the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed a unit of measurement for the energy consumption level of electric vehicles in comparison to gas-powered vehicles. MPGe is an abbreviation for miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent.
The Most Fuel-Efficient Jeep Models

A five-seat crossover SUV, the 2021 Jeep Compass is smaller than the Renegade and features some of its running gear, but it is not nearly as large as a Cherokee. The Subaru Crosstrek, Hyundai Tucson, and Kia Seltos are a few of its rivals. The Compass is nearly as efficient as its rivals in spite of being in a class with several smaller vehicles, some of which are only offered with front-wheel drive.
2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe
MPGe rating: 49
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the brand’s first plug-in hybrid powered by a 2.0-liter hybrid engine. The model has an estimated MPGe rating of 49 in the default hybrid drive mode. Furthermore, it has an all-electric drive range of 21 miles, which means that even in electric mode, the Wrangler can travel long distances.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
MPGe rating: 56
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque when combined with an electric motor. It is the strongest Grand Cherokee currently on the market.
It has a 25-mile electric range on a single charge, so the average daily commuter can primarily use an electric charge on their route. It gets an EPA-estimated 56 MPGe and about 19 mpg on gas alone.
What Are the Factors That Affect Fuel Economy?
Getting a Jeep with a high MPG rating is one thing. However, this is not the only factor that influences fuel consumption. There are numerous external factors that can impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Here are a few examples:
Engine Issues
If you’re planning to buy a pre-owned Jeep, watch for engine issues. There are many issues inside your engine that can cause decreased fuel economy. For example, a faulty oxygen sensor can make your engine consume more fuel.
Weight
The weight of a vehicle influences how much energy it takes to move, which, depending on the situation, can require more or less fuel. A compact vehicle weighs much less than a truck or SUV, but because of its small size, it can have a smaller engine that doesn’t have to work as hard to propel the vehicle forward. When comparing similar-sized vehicles, the materials used to make the components usually determine which car weighs less.
Motor Oil Problems
If your engine isn’t getting enough motor oil to provide essential lubrication, it will have to work harder to produce power. Similarly, old or dirty oil will cause issues. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations as outlined in the owner’s manual, and have your oil changed on a regular basis.
Driving Habits
Your driving habits have a significant impact on your vehicle’s overall fuel economy. You will use more fuel if you drive too fast, accelerate too quickly, and drive aggressively in general. Drive more cautiously if you want to save money at the pump.
