Here’s how Saturday’s game played out.
Final: Iowa 41, Western Michigan 10
Iowa caps off the 2023 non-conference slate with a resounding win. The Hawkeyes are 3-0.
Leshon Williams paced the Hawkeyes with 145 yards on the ground on 12 carries. McNamara finished 9-for-19 through the air for 103 yards, two touchdowns and two picks.
Iowa adds late touchdown
Might this have something to do with Brian Ferentz’s contract mandate requiring 25 points per game? Iowa chose to pass on third down instead of running the clock out from the Western Michigan 2-yard line. When that didn’t work, Iowa ran it on fourth down for a touchdown to hit the 40-point mark.
Iowa leads, 41-10, with 30 seconds remaining.

Iowa tacks on field goal to widen lead
Iowa’s rushing attack continued to overwhelm Western Michigan. The Hawkeyes drove down inside the Western Michigan red zone before settling for a field goal to extend the lead to 24 with 5:20 to go.
Iowa in complete control
The Hawkeye defense forced another punt and Iowa now has possession with a 31-10 lead and 9:32 remaining. Iowa will take over at its own 31.
Iowa defense gets stop
After a 60-yard touchdown was called back due to a penalty, the Iowa defense tightened up and forced a punt. Iowa takes over at its own 27 with 13:54 to go in the game.
End of third quarter: Iowa 31, Western Michigan 10
A big third quarter saw Iowa push the lead by an extra 17 points. The Hawkeyes are 15 minutes away from a perfect 3-0 non-conference run.
Iowa scores quickly to extend lead
The Hawkeyes used their strong field position to extend the lead to 21.
Kamari Moulton scored his second rushing touchdown of the game, this time from a yard out, to put Iowa above the 25-point mark for the first time in 2023.
The Hawkeyes lead 31-10 with 2:10 to go in the third quarter.
Iowa defense forces fumble
Western Michigan tried to be aggressive on third-and-22, and it backfired in a big way. Treyson Bourguet fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Jeremiah Pittman at the WMU 17. Iowa takes over with a chance to put the nail in the coffin.
Iowa run game gets going, leads scoring drive
Iowa’s offense finally found its footing.
The Hawkeyes marched right at Western Michigan after taking over their own 47. Iowa ran it six plays in a row to drive 53 yards for a touchdown, capped off by a 3-yard score from Kamari Moulton.
Iowa leads 24-10 after a successful 2-point conversion. The Hawkeyes will kick off with 4:02 left in the third.

This time, Iowa’s punt return unit found the scoreboard with a blocked punt that traveled through the back of the end zone.

Luke Lachey returns to sideline in walking boot
After suffering a leg injury in the first half, Lachey returned to the sidelines, out of uniform and in a walking boot.

The Hawkeyes were unable to take advantage of the strong field position. Facing third and long, Cade McNamara took a sack for a 10-yard loss and Iowa was forced to punt. The Broncos will begin the next drive at their own 22 with 9:17 left in the third quarter, trailing 14-10.

Iowa holds a 14-10 lead at the break, but missed chances have hurt the Hawkeyes. Iowa is losing the turnover battle 2-0 and is getting outgained 204-201 in total yardage.
McNamara picked off in the end zone
After the Hawkeye defense got off the field quickly, Iowa had a chance to score again before half. Cade McNamara’s pass to the end zone was intercepted on third-and-10.
Leshon Williams scores on screen pass
Leshon Williams took a screen on the first play of the drive and scampered 25 yards for a touchdown to give Iowa the lead, 14-10, with just under 90 seconds before halftime.

Iowa will begin its next drive on the Western Michigan 25-yard line after a great return from Cooper DeJean.
Iowa can’t answer, but Tory Taylor hits a perfect punt
The Hawkeyes crossed midfield, but struggles in the passing game ended the drive early.
Tory Taylor’s punt was downed at the Western Michigan 1-yard line. WMU will take over there with 2:39 to go in the first half and a 10-7 lead.
Western Michigan retakes the lead at Iowa
A Western Michigan field goal from 27 yards out split the uprights to give the Broncos the lead once again. WMU goes up 10-7 with 4:45 to go before half.

Iowa’s offense got its biggest play of the game with a huge run to the left side from Leshon Williams. Williams was pushed out at the Western Michigan 8-yard line.
Hawkeyes’ defense gets much-needed stop
Western Michigan had another big running play, but Iowa’s defense ultimately stood tall and got a stop. After a Western Michigan punt and a big return from Cooper DeJean, Iowa will take over at its own 34.

Iowa game delayed due to weather
Iowa vs. Western Michigan is in a weather delay as of 3:07 p.m. due to a nearby lightning strike. It will be delayed at least 30 minutes.
Western Michigan strikes first
Western Michigan used two explosive plays to get the first points on the board.
A quarterback keeper started the drive with a 29-yard gain. Three plays later, Treyson Bourguet found Anthony Sambucci for 64 yards and a touchdown. WMU leads, 7-0.

Iowa offense punts again
Cade McNamara took a 14-yard loss on a sack on third-and-4, leaving Iowa with a long way to go on fourth down.
Tory Taylor’s punt was pinned at the WMU 4-yard line.
Iowa defense responds
No surprise here: Iowa’s defense picked up the slack and forced a three-and-out that pushed Western Michigan back 11 yards. Iowa will take over on its own 46 after Cooper DeJean’s punt return.
Cade McNamara picked off
A downfield pass for Nico Ragaini was intercepted by Western Michigan’s Anthony Enechukwu. The Broncos take over at their own 24.
Kaleb Johnson ruled out
Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson was ruled out, according to Iowa’s Big Ten-mandated availability report that was released ahead of kickoff.

The Hawkeyes will still be without one of their defensive stalwarts Saturday.
The NCAA denied Iowa’s appeal of the yearlong suspension of defensive lineman Noah Shannon, who acknowledged his involvement in sports wagering while with the Hawkeyes. Kirk Ferentz made the announcement during his weekly news conference.
