Where Was Out Of The Furnace Filmed

Braddock was both the setting and principal filming site for “Out of the Furnace,” though the Christian Bale-Woody Harrelson movie bares a Beaver Valley imprint, too.

Local landmarks to look for in the gritty action-drama debuting Friday:

OFFICIALLY A YINZER

That’s the parking lot of R.J.T.’s Ice Cream and Mini Golf in Independence Township where Bale’s character encounters a crystal meth dealer. Supposedly, the scene takes place in Bergen County, N.J., though Bale couldn’t resist testing out his Pittsburgh dialect, tossing off an authentic sounding “Yinz.” Across the street, the Village Inn bar is plainly in view. A driving scene with Casey Affleck and Willem Dafoe also was shot along that vicinity of Route 30.

A NEW DEER HUNTER

Bale’s character (Russell Baze) tromps through the woods of Raccoon Creek State Park, near the lake, on a spiritual-renewing hunting trip with family friend Red (Sam Shepard). They’ve both got a deer in their sights. What do you think Baze does: Pull the trigger, or does he pull a Robert De Niro late in “The Deer Hunter”?

FIGHT GAME

Affleck puts up his dukes in a staged brawl at an abandoned Peoples Gas facility off Route 30 in Findlay Township.

“People here can’t wait to see the movie to see what scenery we recognize,” Findlay Township Secretary Cheryl Rinehart said.

Neighboring North Fayette Township also is listed in the closing credits. So is nearby Robinson Township, where the opening scene was shot, with ruthless bad guy Curtis DeGroat (Harrelson) kicking some serious butt at the Twin Hi-Way Drive-In.

MILL MOMENT

Bale trained for his role as a steelworker by job shadowing employees at the TMK IPSCO Koppel Tubulars mill in Koppel.

“I never met a more down-to-earth guy,” said mill employee Robert Betters. “He was very personable and completely professional.”

Joined by a few “Out of the Furnace” crew members, notably director Scott Cooper, Bale and IPSCO workers had lunch at Giuseppe’s Tuscany Grill in Big Beaver.

“At lunch he was talking to us about lingo and language, asking us all personal questions like ‘What it’s like to work all those hours?’ and ‘How does your wife feel about that?'” Betters said.

That was all part of Bale’s research to help the Oscar-winning actor get into character.

A quick shot visible in the “Out of the Furnace” trailer shows Bale at the mill, contemplating in a locker room. Betters believes that’s the locker room of the Koppel mill.
