Why is Daniel Caesar ‘cancelled’?
The ‘cancellation’ of Daniel Caesar took place in March of 2019, and surprisingly, he literally asked for it. The drama began when influencer and friend of the singer, YesJulz came under fire for comments about Scottie Beam and Karen Civil, who claimed her actions, including resurfaced tweets, exploited black culture. She also gained negative attention for tweeting a t-shirt with a racial slur on, alongside accusations of being a “culture vulture”.

Daniel Caesar took to his Instagram to address the situation, going on Instagram Live. During the live stream he reportedly asked fans:
“Why are we being so mean to Julz? Why are we being so mean to white people right now? That’s a serious question. Why is it that we’re allowed to be disrespectful and rude to everybody else and when anybody returns any type of energy to us. That’s not equality. I don’t wanna be treated like I can’t take a joke.”
“White people have been mean to us in the past, yeah, but what are you going to do about it? Tell me what you’re going to do about that? There’s no answer, other than creating and understanding and keeping it moving. You have to bridge that gap,” he added.
He finished by mentioning that he was drunk, and told people to “cancel him”: “You can cancel me. I’m making music right now and you guys don’t have to listen to it.”
What has he said about it?
Daniel Caesar addressed his ‘cancellation’ in an interview in February of 2020 with CBC. He recounted the Instagram live, saying:

“I was in the Philippines with my friends. And if you see our crew, it’s very multiracial. We’re from Canada. We get along. And if I like you and I like what you’re doing, the fact that you’re a different colour from me isn’t enough for me to not benefit from what you have to offer the world and vice versa. And we were in the Philippines and stuff was going on back home. We were having a lot of breakthrough conversations, and I was going through a lot, and I was drinking a lot. And I just saw someone being beat up on and it was personal to me. In retrospect, maybe that wasn’t a hill to die on.”
In response to people being hurt by what he said, he responded:
“I saw it. And maybe I was just confused because everybody has been through this. People say things to hurt you personally throughout your whole life, and I’ve heard much worse things said about me. If I heard somebody else say that, I wouldn’t get on my computer and tell them to kill themselves. And maybe that’s just me and what I’ve been through. And I can’t be mad that other people are mad at me. That’s the way the world works.”
Twitter won’t let him forget he’s ‘cancelled’
Although Daniel Caesar has since released popular music, including music with R&B legend Brandi, Twitter often rehashes his cancellation and many fans still appear hurt by the events.
