While I was at the gym while I was working out, Hey You by Pink Floyd started playing, and it killed the vibe and messed up my rhythm.
It happened again later on the drive home, where a random song from Twenty One Pilots started playing, so once I got back home, I decided to investigate.
You are viewing: Why Is Spotify Playing Recommended Songs
While I did come across several reasons why this may have happened, one struck out to me.
It had to do with how Spotify treats its premium users differently.
To stop Spotify from playing suggested music while listening to your songs, make sure your playlist has more than 15 songs. You can also sign up for Premium to stop this from happening in the future.
Why Does Spotify Play Suggested Songs?
Spotify wants you to play the most amount of songs within a given period, and when you play something like a playlist or an album, it becomes a radio station.
This is why Spotify plays suggested music that the algorithm thinks you might like.
It won’t allow you to play more than a few songs from the same artist or album consecutively and will play songs from other artists and albums in your playlist to keep things fresh.
If your playlist is small and doesn’t have a diverse list of artists or genres, Spotify will add songs it has found using its algorithm similar to those already on your playlist.
This will happen if everything in your playlist has already been played once, and you will play other similar songs to keep the flow going.
Add More Music To Your Playlist
Smaller playlists will make Spotify recommend similar music to make the playlist larger, so instead of Spotify doing it, do it yourself with the music you like.
This should be the first thing you do if you are currently on a free Spotify account, so try populating your playlist with more songs.
If you usually play each album individually, I suggest you add all of the music in your album to a playlist of all your albums.

To add songs to your playlist:
- Use the Search to find the album you want to add.
- Tap the album from the search results.
- Tap the three dots near the Like and Download icons.
- Tap Add to Playlist.
- Select your playlist from the list of ones you already have.
Doing this will add all the music in the album to the playlist, making your playlist bigger.
Also have more than 15 tracks in the Liked Songs playlist by liking more songs.
This will also make Spotify suggest music less frequently based on what you might love listening to.
Upgrade To Premium
Spotify’s Free version is structured to follow the format of radio, which means you won’t have any control over what track you are playing, and songs that you currently don’t have in your small playlist or album will also start playing.
This is to help drive up engagement to a song or album, and it is basically an ad served as a song.
If you’ve seen promoted posts on Instagram or Facebook before, it is almost the same as those posts.
Artists pay Spotify to promote their music to people who don’t have premium, which is one of the ways Spotify can make money even if you don’t pay them any for Premium.
Getting Spotify Premium stops Spotify from playing suggested tracks and also removes all restrictions that you previously had, like Shuffle-only, limited skips, and you’ll be able to listen to music at a higher audio quality.
You’ll be able to play your playlists in whatever order you choose on any playlist or album on your phone.
You can skip tracks on your playlist however many times you want, unlike the six skips you could do per hour.
It will only cost you $10 a month, and if you’re a student can get the service for cheaper once you verify your academic credentials with Spotify.
Turn Off Autoplay
If you are getting suggested songs even after being a premium member, you might need to turn off autoplay and stop the app from playing anything on its own.
Disabling autoplay will restrict the app from playing any suggested music everywhere, including after playlists or albums finish playing.

Here’s how you can turn off recommended songs on Spotify:
- Go to Spotify’s main screen.
- Tap the Settings cog icon.
- Scroll down to find Autoplay under Playback.
- Turn the toggle off.
After you’ve turned Autoplay off, check if Spotify plays any recommended tracks without you telling it to do so.
Finding New Music
While Spotify has an excellent algorithm that helps you find music that suits your tastes, how the app introduces you to those tracks can be intrusive.
But if you still want to find new music after getting rid of recommended songs on Spotify, you can go to the Made For You section in the Spotify app.
You’ll get mixes from genres that you listen to, decade and artist mixes, and a weekly selection of songs that helps you discover new music and artists.
This section has a lot of new music the algorithm has curated for you, so you won’t lose Spotify’s recommendation features even if you turn off autoplay.
