Why You Hear a Gurgling Sound Coming from Your Drains

The gurgling sound you hear coming from your drains is when air escapes from your drain. Air is not supposed to be in your drain; it’s supposed to be located inside your drain’s p-trap. When there is a clog obstructing your pipes, it can create suction that pulls on the water in the p-trap, which makes the air movement audible (the gurgling sound) as water appears in the drain.

A gurgling kitchen sink or bathroom sinks are very common as these drains are frequently clogged with grease and hair. Don’t ignore these sink gurgling noises because if they are not fixed quickly, they can cause even bigger plumbing system problems.

How to Fix a Gurgling Sink Drain

Depending on the severity of the clog, there are several methods you can try to stop the gurgling noise coming from your drains. Try some of these methods first to see if anything has helped; otherwise, call Redman for plumbing services.

Drain Cleaner

There are many methods for cleaning drains. Some people use chemical drain cleaners and have good results. Chemical drain cleaner can be harsh on your pipes, though.. Bio-enzyme drain cleaners are less strident and are great for breaking down organic matter like food particles in particular. You can also make your own drain cleaner at home with baking soda and vinegar, then clear the drain with hot water.

Remove the Clog With an Auger or Snake

We often clear sink drains that are clogged with hair. Removing clogs like this can be done with a drain auger or a snake. Drain augers are great for large clogs, or for navigating deep within your pipes. Your local hardware store will also carry drain snakes. Little plastic zip-tie looking tools with barbs on the side are great for grabbing large hair clogs.

Grab the Plunger

If you have a slow draining sink as well as gurgling noises, another solution for removing small clogs is the plunger. Take your plunger and add petroleum jelly to the lip of the plunger cup for a better seal. Plunge straight up and down over the drain for about a minute at a time to see if there is an improvement in how the water flows.

Fix the P-Trap

When you look under your kitchen sink, there should be a big pipe that forms a big U shape. This is the P-trap, but it’s sometimes referred to as a U-bend, J-trap, sink trap, or drain trap. Place a bucket under this bend and then remove the P-trap. This can be a better way to access the clogs in the trap. Dispose of any water that comes out of the pipe.

The total length of all the pieces of plumbing between your drain and the P-trap should be 24 inches or less. If you have a drain pipe that is 1.5 inches long, the vent must be 3.5 feet from the lower part of the trap. You’ll need to modify your P-trap if yours is closer than that to make more distance and help your sink drain properly. A professional plumber can help you with a project like this.

Fix the Air Admittance Valve or Main Vent

If you flush the toilet and hear a gurgling sound from a drain in the other room, then a blockage at the main vent opening is often the culprit. Your home’s main vent is likely on the roof above a bathroom. Shoot hot water into the opening, or a sewer auger can help dislodge blockages.

Some homes have an air admittance valve instead of a vent. This valve is just behind the P-trap. A broken valve can also cause a gurgling kitchen sink; luckily they are easy to replace.

Flush the System

When in doubt, flush the system. You can do this by running hot water down your drain pipes for about 15 minutes. Sometimes, this simple fix is all it takes to stop a gurgling kitchen sink.
