When Is Dino Day

Dinosaur Day is celebrated across the UK on 1 June, and is a golden opportunity for kids and adults alike to increase their knowledge of these fascinating prehistoric reptiles. Whether you’re discovering T-rex and triceratops for the first time or exploring the lesser known dinosaurs – like Incisivosaurus and Deinonychus – this is the day to really get stuck into all things Jurassic, Triassic, and Cretaceous!

And if you’re looking for unique ways to celebrate dinosaurs, here are a few ideas.

Visit a natural history museum

Whether you’re looking for activities in Cardiff, Edinburgh, London or Belfast to mark Dinosaur Day, a sure way to find these fearsome creatures is at a museum of natural history. The Natural History Museum in London is famed for its dinosaur collection, with Dippy the diplodocus being an iconic sight in the establishment’s Hintze Hall.

But you’ll also find plenty of dino friends at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The former was briefly home to the oldest Jurassic dinosaur ever found in the UK – a completely new species that’s thought to have been warm blooded, and only about 80cm tall in adulthood. The National Museum of Scotland, meanwhile, has a 12-metre long, life-size skeleton cast of a T-rex – so you can see just how gigantic this beast was.

See dinosaurs live in action

What better way to celebrate your love for dinosaurs than to see them on stage at a local theatre? Dinosaur World Live is touring the UK this year, bringing all your favourites – from stegosaurus to tyrannosaurus rex – to life with amazing puppetry and heaps of excitement. The show is suitable for children aged three and up, and is a great way to engage with the remarkable history of our planet. If you’re looking for things to do in Cardiff, Southport, or Glasgow this summer, don’t miss this fabulous attraction – book your tickets now.

Go fossil hunting

South Wales is one of the best locations to hunt for prehistoric creatures. You may not find a dinosaur bone, but there are plenty of remains to be found from the Jurassic and Triassic periods, when some of our best loved dinosaurs roamed the earth. Penarth and Lavernock are particularly rich in fossils: you can find the remains of ammonites and brachiopods (both of these are marine creatures) in the rocks, and if you look carefully, you might even find reptile remains, such as the teeth of ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs. Remember to check the local guidelines before you take anything away though – some sites are protected.

Let your imagination run wild

A local park or woodland area could be a great place to let your imagination run wild. Take some dinosaur toys and recreate your own Jurassic Park, or imagine what a dinosaur den or nest might have looked like and build one yourself. If you prefer to stay home, why not bake some dinosaur-shaped cookies or do some dinosaur colouring?
