What To Look For When Buying A Used 4×4 Truck

How many miles has it done?

When you get behind the wheel, take a look at how many miles are on the clock. A 4WD is a robust vehicle, so it’s built to withstand the rigours of the road, but anything with more than 100,000 miles on the clock is probably just going to be more trouble than it’s worth. Breakdowns and part replacement will be costly. You can always speak to the person you’re buying from to see what the service history is like, but only an immaculate history with regular servicing would indicate a used 4×4 worth investing in.

Sit and listen to the engine

Let the engine turn over while in the driving seat. A keen ear will be able to discern a lot from the sound of an engine. Unexpected noises and an irregular rhythm could spell trouble further down the line. Take special interest in the fuel injector pump on diesel models, as replacements are pricey – you should again be listening for unhealthy engine sounds.

If it doesn’t run, ask why

Some used vehicles might not run, but then again, you might be looking for a fixer-upper. Sellers should be upfront about the fact a vehicle doesn’t currently work, but it’s worth asking why that is and what needs doing to put it back in a usable state. You’ll also have to consider the cost of transporting a vehicle which doesn’t currently run, either on a truck or via a tow. If you know what needs doing to a 4×4 and have the parts and knowledge to do it, then it’s a match made in heaven.

Inspect the exterior

Take a good look at the exterior of the 4×4, including the doors. It’s probably not uncommon to find the odd bump or scratch on a 4×4 which has been put through its paces, but you’ll want to ensure doors shut properly or that big accidents haven’t been papered over with a bit of paint. It’s important to know if a vehicle has been in an accident to determine if it has been properly and carefully restored.

Test all electrical equipment

As with any used vehicle, it’s important to check the electrical equipment. From the air conditioning to the dashboard, when you go for a test drive you should try and test as much of the electrical equipment as possible to find out just how much works and if anything important isn’t working.

The Best & Worst Used 4×4

Picking the right make and model 4×4 – even if it’s used – is key for a number of reasons, not least because you’ll want a manufacturer who is prominent enough to have a wide range of spare parts available on the market. This makes it easier to fix anything which breaks or get a vehicle up and running if you need spare parts straight away. Therefore, the best used 4×4 is one which has a wide range of easily accessible replacement parts.

In What Car?’s list for the best second-hand 4x4s in 2020, it was the Audi Q7 which clinched the top spot (though not the 2019 model), while they recommended that people stay well away from the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and the Chevrolet Captiva.
