The American action thriller film directed by Michael Bay ‘13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi’, is in the last days of production in Malta. 13 Hours tells the story of six members of the security team that fought to defend the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi when it came under attack in 2013. The film is based on the book by Mitchell Zuckoff.

Most of the filming took place in Mosta together with other locations including Valletta, Kordin and Manoel Island. ‘13 Hours’ started filming in Malta last April and is expected to be released by Paramount Pictures on January 15, 2016. Michael Bay is best known as the director of Transformers, Pearl Harbour, Bad Boys 2 and Armageddon.

During a set visit today, Minister for Tourism Edward Zammit Lewis, responsible for the film industry, stated that ‘13 Hours’ is the biggest production ever to be filmed in Malta since the Malta Film Commission was set with a direct injection in the economy of around $50 million. This is the best sign of success that the Malta Film Industry has witnessed for many years. It is no doubt that Malta has nowa very competitive industry and we are keeping the momentum for future success, continued the Minister for Tourism Edward Zammit Lewis.
The Minister Zammit Lewis stated that the film industry has a very positive and direct impact on our economy. Malta’s movie industry is also playing a vital part in enhancing the visibility of our islands on the wider global scale. It is attracting tourists who want to visit locations featured in their favourite movies, referred to as ‘screen tourism’.
Government has given a strong boost to this industry, mentioned the Minister for Tourism Edward Zammit Lewis. As part of the short-term vision, Malta has been positioning itself as a competitive and attractive film destination. As part of this strategy, the government introduced new financial incentives aimed at creating the appropriate environment in which this industry can be developed and attract investment, while the Malta Film Commission (MFC) has carried out an extensive marketing campaign in targeted and specific key markets.

On the other hand, the Minister said that as part of a long-term vision for the industry, Government has been coordinating efforts designed to encourage more people to specialise in this industry, primarily through the organisation of training programmes in the various skills required.
The future looks bright for this industry in Malta, said the Minister Zammit Lewis. Government envisages a sustainable film industry that generates greater all year-round economic activity through the creation of new jobs that, in turn, fosters new creative talent and skills.
The Minister for Tourism Edward Zammit Lewis said, that the Ministry for Tourism has set up a Consultative Council, to draft a proper Film policy to guarantee a sustainable film industry which is planned to be launched by the end of this year. Dr Edward Zammit Lewis believes that this is the right time to start working on forming the industry with a longer term vision for it to consistently remain an important contributor to Malta’s economy.
‘We want to transform this active and innovative industry into another success story for the Maltese islands. With the collective efforts of both the Government and the private sector, the Film Industry will grow in the ideal atmosphere of development and growth, concluded the Minister for Tourism Edward Zammit Lewis.
