When Does Daylight Start Getting Longer

Now that we’ve made it through December, daylight hours are getting longer each day in Milwaukee, albeit slowly.

While the sun is still setting well before 5 p.m. in early January, Milwaukee will gain back about 50 minutes of daylight by the end of the month.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, Milwaukee saw 9 hours and 7 minutes of daylight on Jan. 1, with sunset at 4:28 p.m. On Jan. 31, the city will see 9 hours and 57 minutes of daylight, and the sun will set at 5:03 p.m.

Perhaps even more exciting for those who aren’t fans of the dark, by Feb. 29, Milwaukeeans will enjoy 11 hours and 15 minutes of daylight and a 5:41 p.m. sunset.

When does daylight saving time start in 2024?

Every March, daylight saving time grants most Americans an extra hour of evening daylight, at a cost ― setting the clocks forward an hour and losing an hour of sleep. This year, daylight saving time begins again on Sunday, March 10.

In Milwaukee, the sun will set at 6:53 p.m. on March 10 after daylight saving time resumes. The day before, on March 9, the sun will set at 5:52 p.m. However, there is a trade-off. After daylight saving time resumes, it will be darker in the mornings. The sun will rise at 6:11 a.m. on March 9 but won’t rise until 7:09 a.m. on March 10.

When is Milwaukee’s shortest day of the year?

The shortest day of the year typically takes place on Dec. 21, the Winter Solstice, when the sun is at its lowest point in the sky. The sun travels its shortest path through the sky, resulting in the least daylight and longest night of the year.

On Dec. 21, 2023, Milwaukee received just 9 hours and 3 minutes of daylight, the Old Farmer’s Almanac reported. The sun rose at 7:18 a.m. and set at 4:21 p.m.

When is Milwaukee’s longest day of the year?

The longest day of the year occurs on the Summer Solstice, which is between June 20 and June 22, depending on the year. This is when the sun is at its highest point in the sky and travels its longest path, causing the longest period of daylight and shortest night of the year.

This year’s longest day will take place on June 20, 2024. Milwaukeeans will enjoy 15 hours and 25 minutes of daylight. The sun will rise at 5:10 a.m. and set at 8:36 p.m.
