The “Star Wars” theme song played around Zilker Park as gates opened on Friday for the first day of the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Early arrivers rushed in to catch the opening acts at the grounds.

Austin-based country swingers Asleep at the Wheel had a boot-scootin’ set to kick off the weekend on the Honda stage. Festivalgoers navigated a few stray mud patches caused by Thursday’s rain showers. The first few hours of the festival were rather empty, with peak entry times hitting around the mid-afternoon.

Headliner Kendrick Lamar arrived late to his 8:40 p.m. show because his plane broke down. He performed shortened versions of his biggest hits and was cut off by the sound engineers by 10:15 p.m. during “Alright.” The crowd tried their best to keep the show going by chanting, “We gon’ be alright! We gon’ be alright!”

With five artists performing in the 12 p.m. slot, it was a bubbling start to the last day. Matt Maltese, a U.K. singer-songwriter, gave a Lennon-like performance with poetic lyrics accompanied by a Yamaha piano. Texan Katy Kirby opened the Miller Lite stage, attracting several indie fans to the west side of the grounds.

Coming off of a two-year-long tour, Tash Sultana shredded an iconic set on the Honda stage, showcasing their incredible talent as a multi-instrumentalist.

Former One Direction member Niall Horan joked about the sun melting his Irish skin during his performance on the American Express stage. He featured “Story of My Life” during his set and covered Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” His fellow countryman Hozier was a standout performance as well with his timbre reverberating around the park. Hozier encouraged several sing-alongs and harmonies amongst the packed audience that stretched to the T-Mobile stage.
