The Mule is now streaming on Netflix, because nothing says Father’s Day weekend like a Clint Eastwood movie. The 2018 film, which was written by Nick Schenk and directed by Eastwood (who also stars in the lead role), is based on the true story of a 90-year-old drug mule. (The 2014 New York Times article, “The Sinaloa Cartel’s 90-Year-Old Drug Mule,” inspired the film.)
Earl Stone (Eastwood) loves flowers and loves his granddaughter. He’s a gentle old man, and not the kind of guy you would expect to carry hundreds of kilos of cocaine across the country in his pick-up truck for the Mexican cartel. And yet, that’s exactly what he does. I guess that’s why they say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

This is the first film Eastwood has shot in Georgia—he also used the state as a location for his films Richard Jewell and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. For The Mule, Eastwood spent two weeks filming at the Sunshine Gardens on Lumpkin Park Drive—a daylily farm in Augusta, Georgia—featured in the opening sequence of the movie.
Georgia’s Henry County, meanwhile, was used to depict an unnamed small town in the midwest, for a scene in which Eastwood’s character advises a group of women bikers on the issue with their motorcycles. According to the Henry County Times, that scene was filmed at a produce stand in the Kelley-town community, near the intersection of Airline Road and Kelleytown Road. Another scene, feature Eastwood eating ribs, was filmed at Shane’s Rib Shack on Hwy. 155 at East Lake Road. And for the sequences shot in New Mexico, the production filmed inside St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in the city of Las Cruces, according to a report from El Paso Times.
So there you have it! The Mule may take place in the Midwest, but it’s a Southern movie at its heart.
