Most of the time we are a product of our environment. A sum of the people and situations that surrounded us as we grew into the world. Michael W. Smith’s life as a Christian musician is the result of growing up in the Church as the son of Paul and Barbara Smith. He was born on October 7, 1957 in Kenova, West Virginia to a Christian couple. His parents were not particularly rich, they were simple men who worked as oil refiners (father) and caterers (mother). Still, they took their child, the Word of God, and took it to church with them as often as possible, and it began to pay off at an early age when Michael fell in love with the church piano.

Through his love of the piano he joined the choir and by the time Michael was 10 years old he was a devoted Christian who had found his way to Christ through music. On top of that, his Christian faith was also supported by his friends and family, but unfortunately when he lost the former when they went to college, things went south for Michael W. Smith. To cope with the loneliness and misery of being alone, he found a mate with alcohol and drugs. Michael then attempted to attend college, applied and enrolled at Marshall University, but dropped out soon after one semester.

Though Michael is going through a drug-getting-a-grip phase, Shane Keister advised him to bring his obvious talents to Nashville to pursue a career as a professional musician. Becoming a successful musician and returning to his faith as a Christian was due to his decision to move in 1978 on the advice of his friend.

This move to Nashville prompted Michael to join a contemporary Christian music group called the Higher Ground. He became the group’s keyboardist and after a few years, through continued association with the Christian group, Michael began to find strength in the Christian faith he once lost while rededicating his life to Jesus Christ. After his return to life as a full-time Christian, Meadowgreen Music was offered a contract in 1981. Noting his songwriting skills, they had offered him to write for some of their artists, including actors like Amy Grant, Sandi Patty, Bill Gather, and a few others.
