When Calls The Heart Spoilers

The Season 10 finale of When Calls the Heart left us all with our eyes wide open and jaws dropped. The dramatic cliffhanger of the wildly popular Hallmark show has us wondering what the heck happened to Lucas (Chris McNally), who Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) is going to choose, and how Nathan (Kevin McGarry) fits into the picture. (Need a recap of the drama-packed season finale? We’ve got you covered!) Well, we decided to get a few answers from an expert: When Calls the Heart executive producer and co-creator, Brian Bird.

Elizabeth, Lucas - When Calls the Heart

Bird gave Soaps.com an insider’s look at why they decided to have Elizabeth end her engagement to Lucas — which they knew would elicit mixed opinions from Hearties. He shared that the long-running series is an “evolving creative process” that can bring forward unexpected “new wrinkles and new storylines.” That’s how the team concluded that “Elizabeth would never leave this place” — her home is Hope Valley!

“Her whole life is here. Her whole world is here. And for Lucas, he’s always been bound for a bigger stage,” Bird reflects. “From the very first day he arrived in Hope Valley, you could tell this was a guy bound for something bigger in his life. So, if you’re following those two threads independently, this is where it went. And this is where it’s going.” That’s pretty crushing news for #TeamLucaBeth, but Bird wants to make sure they are creating “real living, breathing characters for the show.” The more authentic they are, the more we fall in love with the Hope Valley characters on their “journey.”

Bird wants “to be true” to the idea that “none of our lives goes in a straight line,” so that’s why they throw a few curveballs into Elizabeth’s story. He admits that “it doesn’t always make everybody happy,” especially when it comes to “heartbreak.” (Oh, we feel that sentiment hard!) But Bird promises good things are on the way, we just have to be patient — even if we are not. “It took us five seasons to get Elizabeth and Jack (Daniel Lissing) married before Jack had to leave town,” Bird teases. “This show has always been a slow burn and we feel like we have to stay true to all of that.”

Hearties better prepare for an epic Season 11, which is set to kick off on Sunday, April 7.
