Where Is The Mother Filmed

If you want to watch a movie about a truly heroic mother this Mother’s Day, you can’t go wrong with The Mother, the new Jennifer Lopez movie now streaming on Netflix.

Directed by Niko Caro (The ZooKeeper’s Wife, Mulan), with a screenplay by Misha Green, Andrea Berloff and Peter Craig, The Mother is a chance for Lopez to be a bonafide action hero. Her character—known only as “the mother”—is forced to give up her baby for her daughter’s own safety, and enter the witness protection program. But when the bad guys come back 12 years later and kidnap her daughter, there’s nothing that can stop JLo from going full Mama Bear mode to get her baby back.

Also starring Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, and Gael García Bernal, The Mother features Lopez taking down bad guys in a variety of locations all over the world, from snowy mountaintops to scorching tropical islands. But where, exactly, was The Mother filmed?

Read on to find out more about The Mother 2023 filming locations, from Canada to the Canary Islands.

Where was The Mother filmed?

The Mother was filmed on location in both in the area around Vancouver, Canada, and on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria.

For those scenes in the snowy wilderness, The Mother filmed in the winter of 2021 in Smithers, British Columbia, a small northwestern Canadian town that’s not too far from the Alaskan border. That means Jennifer Lopez really was roughing it out in the cold.

In an interview for The Mother press notes, Lopez recalled the experience of being exposed to the elements. “We were filming in Smithers, up close to Alaska,” Lopez said. “It was crazy cold, and all you would see is white. The sky was white. Nothing, there was no color. And it was like, ‘Where are we?’ Everyday I would have to put on layers and layers of stuff to be out there shooting all day and all night. The hoods and the canvases and the leather belts and the knives and all the things. Even in the cabin we’re staying in, there were little critters running around every morning. It was crazy. But it definitely helped get into character and put me in the mindset of who she was the past 12 years at her core: a person who lived alone and was awkward almost around people now and was a woman of very few words until her daughter starts to help her open up again.”

As for that big chase scene, in which Lopez pursues the bad guys through the streets of Cuba, that was actually shot not in Cuba, but on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, which is one of the Canary Islands off the coast of northern Africa. If you’ve ever visited Gran Canaria, you might recognize some familiar locations. According to a report from the Canarian Weekly, filming locations on the island included Monte Leon, Vegueta, Gabinete Literario de Las Palmas, Jardín de La Marquesa, San Telmo and Calle Canalejas, Fataga, El Berriel airfield (which doubled as Cuba’s Guantánamo military base), San Juan, and Meloneras.

Affleck joined his wife in the Canary Islands for the shoot, so it looks like Bennifer got to have a nice tropical vacation. After shooting in all that snow, JLo deserves it!
