-
Working Vehicle: The vehicle providing the jump should be in good working condition.
Steps:
-
Prepare the Vehicles:
-
Park both vehicles close enough so the jumper cables can reach both batteries but ensure they don’t touch.
-
Turn off the ignitions and put both cars in Park or Neutral. Engage the parking brakes.
-
-
Identify Battery Terminals:
-
Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on both batteries.
-
They’re usually marked with red (+) and black (-) covers or indicators.
-
-
Connect the Jumper Cables:
-
Connect one end of the red jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery.

Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the working battery.
Caution: Ensure the metal clamps don’t touch any metal surfaces other than the intended battery terminal.
-
-
Connect the Black Cable:
-
Connect one end of the black cable to the negative (-) terminal of the working battery.
-
For the dead battery, instead of connecting to the negative terminal directly, find an unpainted metal surface under the hood to attach the other end of the black cable. This serves as a grounding point.
-
-
Start the Working Vehicle:
-
Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery.
-
-
Attempt to Start the Dead Vehicle:
-
After a few minutes, try starting the vehicle with the dead battery. If it starts, leave both vehicles running.
-
If it doesn’t start, check the cable connections and wait a few more minutes before attempting again.
-
-
Removing the Cables:
-
Remove the jumper cables in the reverse order of how you connected them.

Start with the black cable from the previously dead vehicle, then the black cable from the working vehicle, followed by the red cable from the working vehicle, and finally the red cable from the previously dead vehicle.
-
-
Test the Battery:
-
Drive the car that was jump-started or let it run for a while to recharge the battery. Consider getting the battery and charging system checked by a professional to ensure it’s in good condition.
