Who Is Joseph Rosendo Married To

Molly Davidson smiled brightly as she walked past her friends and family down the aisle toward her groom. Dressed in a layered satin and tule dress, she slowly lifted the bottom, just inches enough to step up to the altar. Her groom, Kye Gauger, adjusted his bow tie, pulled at his tuxedo jacket, then stared at the preacher.

“Dearly beloved,” minister Brian Offutt began, “we are gathered here today to pretend to join this beautiful young couple in holy matrimony.”

Tuesday morning in the worship center at Monterey Church of Christ, Offutt pretended to wed two students, Davidson, 4, and 5-year old Gauger from Sugar N Spice Preschool, finishing the monthlong lesson of marriage and family for the class of 4-year-olds.

While the girls twirled in their dresses and played with their veils, the boys skewed their bow ties and scuffed their shoes as two of their classmates made the ultimate vow.

Excited to participate in the final section of the lesson, Offutt said his favorite part was to teach children about the value of family as God designed it and to provide understanding and structure in their future.

“I like teaching them that marriage is something special,” he said.

Director of Sugar N Spice, Laura Bryan, said the students have practiced for a month by studying famous couples from the Bible and rehearsing their set roles for the ceremony.

Students were selected for each role randomly by pulling their names out of a hat, Bryan said.

Besides the bride and groom, the wedding consisted of greeters, the choir, candlelighters, ushers, a flower girl and ring bearer, bridesmaids, groomsmen, a maid of honor, a best man and parents and grandparents of the bride and groom, all performed by students.

However, the students’ real parents and grandparents filled the audience as mothers blew kisses to their daughters, and fathers instructed sons to fix their ties.

Dressed for each character, including thick glasses, baggy sweaters and old-fashioned hats for the grandparents of the bride and groom, the wedding party marched down the aisle, toeing the black electrical tape to guide them to the altar.

“It was so adorable,” said mother of the bride, Traci Davidson. “When (Molly) saw her dress, she told me how beautiful it was. She was so excited to be the bride.”

A graduate of Sugar N Spice, Traci remembered participating in the event as a child, and looked forward to sharing the experience with her daughter.

“It’s good for our kids to be taught early what marriage is about,” she said. “I don’t think marriage is stressed enough today.”

Under an archway of tool and greenery, and below three signs reading “Pray, Wait, Serve,” Offutt began to officiate the service.

“Do you know why we call marriage holy?” he asked Gauger, who immediately shook his head then looked out into the audience. “Because, well, most importantly, God believes it’s special.”

Offutt kept the ceremony short, comparing matrimony to macaroni and vows to vowels, before he asked Gauger to repeat after him.

Shy and befuddled by his beautiful bride, Gauger softly stated “I Kye, pretend to take Molly to be my wife. I pretend, to have and to hold, to love, cherish, and honor as long as I shall live.”

As Molly stated the same, the couple smoothly continued to exchange rings and promise a lifetime of love and happiness.

Offutt thought reiterating the importance of both provided an opportunity for great discussion with parents and their children.

“We never had that talk with Kye before this,” said his mother, Samantha Gauger, “but after he became the groom, we thought we needed to explain it to him so he could understand it more.”

Kye stressed the wedding was pretend and shied at the thought of his young bride; even though he told his parents he enjoyed playing the groom. No matter the importance or love promised, a boy reverts to playground survival: girls are gross.

The audience stifled their laughter as the wedding closed and Offutt asked, “Well Kye, do you want to kiss your bride?”

With a strong shake of his head and a definite no, the wedding ended with a curt nod and a bond that will live in family albums and memories for a lifetime.

As for the bride, the distant emotion did not skew her excitement from receiving a wedding ring. In fact, she leaves future wives a word of advice:

“Don’t be nervous,” she mumbled as she turned into her dad’s shoulder and buried her head.
