When Is Azzi Fudd Coming Back

Azzi Fudd’s 2023-24 season is over. On Wednesday, UConn announced that the junior guard suffered a torn ACL in practice on Tuesday, Nov. 14 and will miss the remainder of the campaign.

“We’re all just so upset for Azzi,” Geno Auriemma said in the release. “She worked hard to be healthy for this season, and it’s unfortunate when you put in a lot of hard work and have a setback like this. Azzi loves the game and works tirelessly. I’m confident she’ll rehab with the same work ethic and come back better than ever. We’ll obviously miss her presence on the court, but Azzi will continue to be a great teammate and important part of this team this season. Our program will support Azzi through her recovery however we can.”

The first sign of trouble came prior to tip-off against Maryland on Thursday when the team announced Fudd would miss the contest with a knee injury but didn’t provide any more details. Afterwards, Geno Auriemma explained that it was a non-contact injury that happened during practice when she pulled up after a shot and said, “That felt funny.”

“[She then] walked to the training room,” he continued. “I’m like, ‘Did she stub her toe? Turf toe? What?’ … I guess we’ll find out but it’s like most all the other ones that have happened: Nobody near ‘em. Just random stuff.”

In two games this season, Fudd averaged 11.0 points in 30.4 minutes per game and in her career, she’s put up 13.1 points in 28.2 minutes per game.

The Arlington, Virginia native has been cursed with injuries during her basketball career. In high school, she tore the ACL and MCL in the same right knee in 2019 then missed nearly her entire COVID-19 pandemic-shortened senior year due to a foot sprain.

As a freshman at UConn, she missed 11 games with a foot injury. Last year, a knee injury initially kept her out for eight games but after just six quarters back, she suffered a second injury to the same knee and missed the final 14 games of the regular season. Since she arrived in Storrs, Fudd has played in just 42 of 77 possible contests.

Fudd is the fifth Husky to miss all or most of a season over the last three campaigns, joining Aubrey Griffin (leg, back) in 2021-22, Paige Bueckers (torn ACL) and Ice Brady (dislocated patella) in 2022-23 and Jana El Alfy (ruptured achilles) this year.

That doesn’t even count Paige Bueckers’ tibial plateau fracture and lateral meniscus tear in Dec. 2021, Dorka Juhász’s season-ending wrist injury in the 2022 Elite Eight, Juhász broken thumb in Nov. 2022, Caroline Ducharme’s head injuries and a bunch of other ailments that kept players out for a handful of contests.
