Just ask the Raines football coach about his defense.

“They put a donut on the board,” Masline said.

Zero.

Chalk up another victory, a decisive one, for the cardinal and silver side of Moncrief Road.

Chasing, batting footballs and tackling from sideline to sideline, Raines added another victory to its lengthy list of triumphs, defeating rival Ribault 30-0 in Saturday’s 52nd Northwest Classic at Alvin White Stadium.

Carleton Butler rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two more to lead the charge on the offensive side of the ball.

Already champions of District 3-5A, Raines added another set of bragging rights.

Their fifth consecutive victory in the series — Raines holds the edge, 38 wins to 14, going back to the first Northwest Classic in 1970. The largest margin of victory since 2017, when Raines won 41-6. The first shutout since 2006, a 39-0 Vikings success.

Raines earned them all afternoon long, thoroughly stifling Ribault (1-8, 0-3 District 3-5A) in a backyard battle that was always passionate and occasionally heated — players from both teams drew flags for mutual jawing before the kickoff and officials issued an ejection after a first-half altercation.

“It’s always good when you see your defense come out and play lights out,” Masline said. “It’s indescribable, because it’s so hard to hold a team to zero points. It doesn’t matter what type of offense it is, anybody can score.”

Raines set the tone from the opening snap.

Defensive end Sabian Hendricks surged into the backfield, downing Damontrio Glee for a loss, and the Vikings (6-2, 3-0) never let up.

Even though Raines didn’t force seven turnovers as in 2020 — a first-quarter pick from Derrick Griffin was the lone Vikings takeaways — the effort was more than enough.

Dequon King and Kyree Hammond led a secondary that limited Ribault to 33 percent completion, and Rashaad Hall ranged freely to snuff out the run.

“The run fits were good all day,” Masline said. “In the passing game, we gave up a few passes that we’ll clean up technique-wise, but other that that, man, they played lights out.”

DEFENSE WAS TROJANS’ STRENGTH

In a familiar pattern, the Ribault defense more often than not held up its part of the challenge, keeping the margin from reaching running-clock proportions even though Raines began six of its drives in Trojan territory.

Zavotray Brown and Carmello Cooper pressured Butler off the edge, tallying a sack each, while Khristian Castleberry and Breon Jordan keyed a linebacker unit that limited the damage from the Raines ground game.

But they didn’t get much help.

The offense largely sputtered, and special teams also fell flat for the Trojans. Ribault botched a punt snap, presenting Raines the football in prime field position, and had a bizarre miscue when the third-quarter kickoff barely moved off the tee and had to be downed nearly where it was kicked.

BUTLER’S BACK

Senior quarterback Butler showed he hasn’t missed a beat after recovering from nearly a month on the sidelines.

He found the end zone with a 1-yard sneak on the Vikings’ first possession of the game, a 44-yard march that chewed up four and a half minutes, and added subsequent scoring tosses to Kareem Burke and Tadarius Devoe.

Super 11 receiver Quincy Burroughs also joined the downfield brigade, hauling in passes for 60 yards, and Burke — among the Gateway Conference’s premier multi-threat players all season — finished with 85 all-purpose yards.

“We have to clean some stuff up offensively, at the line of scrimmage,” Masline said. “But other than that, I think we’re moving in the right direction.”
