Who Was Shot On Hijack

Hijack spoilers follow.

It looks like the summer sleeper hit is here, in the shape of an A330 plane making its weeks-long way towards London.

Hijack stars a brooding and mysterious Idris Elba – far from his wheelhouse, we know – who just wants to get home to his family, but his Kingdom Airlines flight has been upended by a rogue group of hijackers with murky motives.

The latest, third episode of the Apple TV+ thriller, ‘Draw a Blank’, shows the in-flight back-and-forth over whether the ragtag group of shouty captors are carrying live ammunition in their fake-ish looking guns.

A conveniently ex-Egyptian-military man sat in caviar class behind Elba’s Sam Nelson first raises the possibility the bullets are blanks in urgent whispers to his wife, who just wants him to mind his own business.

Sam vacillates on whether to do anything with the information, but a clever ploy to confirm the identity of the bullets prompts him to take on the hijackers as the episode draws to a close. Armed with nothing but a food tray and a fire extinguisher, Sam goes up against the smarmy hijacker, with his carafe of coffee and possible gun.

It’s while Nelson and another do-gooder passenger are fighting it out with the hijacker and his horrendous Hawaiian shirt in the cabin kitchen that all hell breaks loose in economy.

The family of four’s little girl Lizzie disappears from under her parents’ noses, despite being sat in the middle seat – a miraculous feat in itself.

Lizzie’s parents launch a furious hunt, prompting their Australian foe across the aisle to turn friend and unbuckle her seatbelt to help the search and rescue. Despite the fact a plane has precious few hiding places, they really can’t find little Lizzie.

In the kitchen at the back, Nelson is confronted with the end of the hijacker’s gun. “We know they’re blanks,” Nelson tells him.

Meanwhile, the hijackers’ patience is boiling over. Up in the cockpit, head hijacker Stuart knocks out the supposed blanks from his gun’s magazine and replaces them with what looks a lot like live ammunition.

He marches furiously down to the rabble at the back, cocking his gun as he goes.

Then we’re back in the minuscule kitchen with its detritus of implements repurposed as weapons. “So go on then. Pull the f**king trigger,” says Nelson. A shot rings out. A look of shock hits Nelson’s face. Credits roll.

The third episode thus ends on the biggest cliffhanger yet, with the first airborne death hanging in the balance.

So who took the bullet? It’s a scene of turmoil in the back cabin, so there are certainly some contenders.

The first is that Nelson himself could have been shot. Despite the fact the Hawaiian-shirted hijacker likely has blanks, a blank fired at close range can on occasion prove fatal. So, if Nelson did die, what would be the plane’s hope then?

Basing our conclusion on simple television rationale, Hijack is unlikely to have killed off its star in episode three of a seven-part arc. Even Game of Thrones wouldn’t dare.

Given that Stuart cocks his gun and looks like he’s taking aim, we’re going to guess he’s the one who pulls the trigger.

So who could it be? Little elusive Lizzie? The death of a small girl is a tough place to come back from, even if the hijackers do want to send a message.

Since we saw the family’s across-the-aisle nemesis very pointedly get up to help search for Lizzie, it looks like she could very well be the one killed.

Amidst the turmoil, the Aussie woman was repeatedly shown, first getting up from her seat, then looking for Lizzie, who was just crawling around the aisles. The two women also had a moment of mutual recognition before all hell broke loose.

For a clearer picture on what happened once the credits rolled, we’ll have to tune in next week to find out, but our bet is that the plane’s manifest might be lighter by one young woman flying economy.

Hijack is available to stream on Apple TV+.
