After my Mom died, a friend told me that I was going to start finding dimes. My initial (and understandable) response was, “Huh?” She explained to me that dimes start appearing in our path once a loved one has left our lives. Someone had told her this same thing when her Mom had passed away and after that, she started seeing them everywhere.
It was a lovely sentiment and I very much liked the idea, but I was skeptical that I would find any of my own – I couldn’t really remember finding them in the past – and even if I did, would it have any affect on me? I mean, it’s just a dime.

It wasn’t even two days later and I found one. A lone shiny dime at my feet when I exited the car in a parking garage. Hm. It was nice. The next day I found one in the corner of an elevator. Then, that weekend, the man that I was dating was over at the house. Right as he was about to tell me something, I saw a dime sitting on the edge of my sideboard. I wondered if he’d put it there. He hadn’t. When I asked him what he was about to say, he told me that he was thinking his sister (who had passed away) would really like me.
Yep. I was officially a ‘dime after death’ convert.

I quietly started wishing for a dime to be in my path. To no one in particular – just the air and the universe. “Please, today, let me find one.” It provided me a weird sense of safety and a feeling of being watched over.
Once I started talking about it, it was amazing how many people told me that they also find dimes. I had to wonder… is it really coming from the beyond or is it something that we manifest so we don’t feel alone? And either way, does it matter?
I decided to take to Google to see what was up.
“Someone or something is trying to get your attention. Ancestors, spirits, guides, or deceased loved ones want you to know they’re looking out for you. The number 10 symbolizes a circle, so a dime might indicate fulfillment, unity, or coming full circle.”

I’ve found them in the most random places. One solitary dime at the foot of our garden. A dime in each of the girls’ lunchbags, that they swore they didn’t put there. One sitting under the string of my daughter’s ukelele. On a hike, climbing up out of a cave, I put my hands down onto the ground covered with sticks and leaves… and bam! Dime in the woods.
But it was the dime-finding on Mother’s Day that had us all standing staring at one another with our mouths gaping open. Spring was giving us a slow start but the sun was shining so we decided to go for a walk. The path along the Lakeshore was busy – I guess everyone else’s Mom also wanted to get some fresh air. One of my daughters asked to walk down on the rocks. They’re a bit rough in a jagged and well, rocky sort of way, and it was very clear that no one strolls down there, but I decided to be fun and have a little adventure. As we stepped down onto a big rock slanted towards the water, on a literal unbeaten path – there it was, glimmering in the sun.
I go through phases where I don’t find any for a long while and then, when I need it most, I will find them on the regular. Sometimes they’re old and hard to see and sometimes they’re shiny and new and directly in my path. So, as it is in life, there are moments when things are obvious and clear and other days when I have to do a little searching.
So to my question of: does it really matter? I’m leaning towards, it doesn’t. Because I can tell you from direct experience, it feels really pleasurable to believe.
