Where To Donate Luggage

Looking to upgrade to the latest lightweight carry-on? Have a few outdated duffel bags? Looking to “Marie Kondo” your house and realize you have one too many full-sized suitcases?

Whatever you do – don’t throw them out!

There are so many places that will accept your used luggage. Plus, you will feel good knowing you prevented it from ending up in a landfill and are helping someone out in need.

HERE ARE 5 WAYS TO DONATE YOUR OLD LUGGAGE:

1. DROP IT OFF AT THE SALVATION ARMY

Salvation Army is a top-scoring charity that provides basic necessities, hospice care, shelter for the homeless, rehab, and more. Salvation Army has dedicated drop-off centres at their thrift stores where you can donate your luggage. Click here for a map of their Canadian locations.

note: roughly 25% of what gets donated to Salvation Army ends up in landfill. This is partially because some stuff that get’s donated is simply too damaged. To improve success of your item being given a new life, use good judgement knowing this item may be given to someone in your community and this item can provide them with a safe and dignified way to carry their belongings. Skip the donation bins you see in parking lots and bring to the in-store drop-off.

2. GIVE IT TO NOT JUST TOURISTS, A CHARITY THAT LETS TOURISTS BRING LIFE-SAVING SUPPLIES OVERSEAS

The Canadian-based not-for-profit, Not Just Tourists, helps tourists give back on their vacation by taking an extra suitcase filled with medical supplies to their overseas destination. Of course they need suitcases to fulfil these missions so they are always looking for large full-sized suitcase donations.

3. DONATE TO A WOMEN’S SHELTER…

… Like the downtown Eastside Women’s Shelter in Vancouver, a place that provides safety and support to marginalized and at-risk women. Luggage and bags with wheels are on their “need list”.

4. HAVE A CLOTHING BANK PICK IT UP AT YOUR DOOR

Clothing Bank’s aren’t just for clothes. They often accept other items, depending on which foundation they are supporting. Oasis Clothing Bank in Ontario – which provides addiction recovery and employment services, is currently accepting luggage. If you have over 3 garbage bags filled with donation items they will come to your house to pick it up.

5. TRADE/BARTER/SELL IT ON BUNZ TRADING ZONE

If you don’t have access to these donation locations you can still avoid the landfill by using a trading or selling platform. Bunz Trading Zone was created to try and help make the world more sustainable by giving new life to unwanted items. Currently Bunz is active in most major Canadian cities. Or there is always tried and tested Craigslist.

OUR NEIGHBOURS TO THE SOUTH:

Will you be travelling or living in the US? There are also several American based not-for-profits that accept gently used luggage and bags for children in foster care. Often times foster children are given a garbage bag to transfer their belongings to their next placement. Giving kids proper luggage makes the transition easier and more dignified.
