Who Is The New Mayor Of Harvey Illinois

Harvey residents are gearing up for the 2023 elections with two contenders trying to unseat first-term Mayor Christopher Clark.

Anthony McCaskill, former board president for the Harvey Park District, and 2nd Ward Ald. Marshun Tolbert, along with Clark, filed nominating papers for the Feb. 28 primary.

The deadline for filing petitions was Monday.

Clark, a general practice attorney and former alderman in Harvey’s 3rd Ward, garnered 61% of the vote in the spring 2019 election to defeat McCaskill for the mayor’s job. Tolbert was elected to his first term as alderman in that election.

Clark and McCaskill were among seven contenders in the February 2019 mayoral primary after then-Mayor Eric Kellogg was prevented from seeking a fifth term because of a term-limit referendum Harvey voters passed in 2016.

McCaskill finished second to Kellogg in the 2015 election, when Kellogg won a fourth term.

Clark engineered the term-limit referendum that blocked Kellogg and two aldermen from seeking a fifth term.

Clark also drafted a ballot initiative that established a February primary for local races with more than four candidates. The February 2019 primary was the first election as a result of that initiative.

Filing papers in the city’s 1st Ward were incumbent Ald. Shirley Drewenski and challenger Charles Givines.

In the 2nd Ward, Tolbert did not file for reelection, with six people looking to replace him — Albert Abney, Melvin Bond, Colby Chapman, Antonia McBride, Angelette Taylor and Yarif Vhora. Tolbert was elected alderman in 2019.

In the city’s 3rd Ward, Ald. Quinton Crudup is not seeking reelection.

Vying to replace him are Mauzkie Ervin, Myra Gardner, Shahnawaz Hasan, Jeffery Maxey, Bonnie Rateree and Telanee Smith, according to petitions filed with Harvey’s city clerk.

In the 4th Ward, Ald. Tracy Key is seeking reelection, and also filing were Kenneth “Ken” Henderson, Reginald Morris and A. Mannan Vohra.

Fifth Ward Ald. Dominique Randle-El filed for reelection along with challenger Mark Golden.

In the 6th Ward, Ald. Tyrone Rogers filed nominating papers as did Melville King Jr. and Keith Price.

Randle-El had won the seat in 2019 after Donald Nesbit was prevented by the term limits.

City Clerk Rosa Arambula filed for reelection and challengers Joyce Brown, Felicia Powell Johnson and Monique Williams filed.

Aisha Pickett, city treasurer, is seeking reelection but will be challenged by David Clay II.
