Why Are People Boycotting Disney

Entertainment giant Disney is being hit with calls for a boycott, paving a rocky road for the release of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie, The Marvels.

Disney is known for being a superhero powerhouse, but recently many fans have expressed their concerns over the amount of Marvel content and its quality.

The Marvels is set for release on November 10 and follows on from Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, and Wanda Vision, among other MCU projects.

However, recent developments mean the movie could be in danger of taking a hit at the box office.

Disney has been hit with calls for a boycott call after a donation it made in early October to organizations that are providing humanitarian relief to those affected by the Israel-Hamas war.

The donation followed the events of October 7, when Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, which subsequently launched airstrikes on Gaza.

A statement on the company’s website on October 12 said: “Following the deadly Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel, The Walt Disney Company is donating $2 million to organizations that are providing humanitarian relief in the region.”

Robert A. Iger, chief executive officer, said in the statement: “In the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks targeting Jews in Israel this past weekend, we must all do what we can to support the innocent people experiencing so much pain, violence, and uncertainty—particularly children.

“We condemn these attacks, the hate that motivated them, and all acts of terrorism, and we will continue working to find more ways to provide support in the region, and to honor the victims, their families, and all those affected by this war.”

The company donated $1 million to Magen David Adom, an affiliate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, that provides emergency medical and blood banking services in Israel, and $1 million to other nonprofit organizations working in the region, particularly those with a focus on providing aid to children.

However, the move has faced backlash, with social media users calling out the company for seemingly not offering support for those impacted in Gaza.

Commenting on a trailer for the movie that was posted on X, formerly Twitter by @FilmUpdates, a user said: “BOYCOTT DISNEY!”

Another added: “F*** Disney. Free palestine. Boycott”

A third commented:”Guys. Remember to pirate these movies and not let a penny reach the studios.”

One social media user hit back at those calling for a boycott: “If you guys want to boycott correctly, make sure you know where company donations are going more than the general country. Disney donated to Israeli funds, yes, but it was to the Israeli Red Crescent (a Muslim branch of the Red Cross) & nonprofits that focus on aiding children.”

Another, annoyed with calls to boycott major brands, posted: “Please STOP TELLING PEOPLE that the main three companies to boycott are McDonald’s, Starbucks, and Disney.”

The commenter then specifically pointed out that Disney is not on a list of companies targeted by Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions, a Palestinian-led movement that says its aim is to end international support for Israel’s oppression of Palestinians.

McDonald’s and Starbucks do not appear on the main BDS site list of companies to boycott either.

McDonald’s recently faced a boycott after McDonald’s Israel donated meals to military units following the October 7 attacks. Several McDonald’s franchises in primarily Muslim countries have issued statements that oppose the stance taken by McDonald’s Israel.

Starbucks also faced scrutiny after the company sued its worker-led labor union Workers United, saying a pro-Palestinian social media post from a union account early in the Israel-Hamas war angered hundreds of customers and damaged its reputation. A trailer for The Marvels released on social media has been targeted with comments urging people not to watch the film.

One angry social media user said: “Boycott Disney for standing with genocide of Palestinian people.”

“Remember to boycott everyone, if you want to see the movie just pirate it lmao,” another said.

Other statements included: “BOYCOTT DISNEY #FreePalestine” and “Boycotting this film = Boycotting Disney.”

Newsweek has contact Disney via email for comment.
