When Do Summer Internship Applications Open

You’re in the right place if you’re wondering…

  • “When do summer internship applications open?”

When to apply for summer internships?

Summer internships are competitive and a high proportion of successful applicants end up landing a permanent role. If you want to get a place, start searching for opportunities and preparing your applications from October of the year before.

Different companies and organisations have different deadlines, but the general rule is that the bigger the name, the earlier you’ll need to apply. Most summer internship deadlines fall in December and January.

If you’re looking for a position on a major finance or accountancy scheme, Bank of America, Deloitte, KPMG, and Grant Thornton all have rolling deadlines from autumn the year before. These are just a few examples that highlight how early you’ll need to apply for the most sought after internship programmes.

Smaller companies usually have deadlines in the new year, from February to as late as April. And there may still be opportunities going as late as May, so don’t lose hope if your early applications aren’t successful.

When to apply for internships after you’ve graduated?

Once you’ve finished your final year at university, you’re no longer restricted by term times and can apply for a wider range of internship opportunities.

However, if you want to dive into an internship as soon as you’ve graduated, you’ll need to apply well in advance. Often that means more than six months before. For summer starts, most big employers are open to applications in the autumn and have deadlines around the New Year.

If the industry is important rather than the start date, bear in mind that many internship programmes are seasonal:

  • As mentioned above, accounting firms tend to advertise in the winter
  • Retail and e-commerce businesses advertise earlier in the year as they are busiest in November and December
  • Travel companies generate their revenue in the summer, so tend to advertise for interns in the New Year

Many of the major industry names in finance, retail, and management will have autumn advertisements but rolling deadlines. This means they could close applications at any time, so start work on your application as soon as you see a role you’re interested in.

If you’re taking time out after university or focusing on other commitments before finding an internship, plenty of employers advertise positions throughout the year.

Look out for companies that have internship programmes outside of the traditional cycle and specific work experience opportunities for graduates. For example, Shell offers ‘assessed’ internships that typically last for 10-12 weeks in a specific business area. Perform well and you could land a permanent role.
