Why Do My Kittens Keep Sneezing

Cats and kittens can sneeze just like humans, and it’s actually quite cute to see! However, there are some situations in which too much sneezing from your cat might be cause for concern.

You can help support your cat’s health by bringing them in for regular physical examinations and making sure their vaccinations are up to date. In between these visits, keep your eye out for potential signs of illness such as excessive sneezing.

Causes of Sneezing in Cats

Cats sneeze for the same reason we do — to clear irritants out of the nose or mouth. Let’s take a look at a few of the specific causes of your cat or kitten’s sneezes.

Allergens or Irritants in the Air

Your cat can react to allergens, just like you! When your cat breathes in irritants or allergens in the air, it could cause them to sneeze once or even repeatedly.

Substances like dust, mold, pollen, cigarette smoke, and perfume could irritate your cat’s airways. If your cat is sneezing excessively, check to see if there’s something in the air that could be causing the reaction.

Viral or Bacterial Infections

Cats can suffer from upper respiratory infections just like humans, and they are particularly common within animal shelters where animals at different stages of vaccination are co-mingling.

Infections that range widely in seriousness can include sneezing as a side effect, so even if your cat doesn’t seem ill, constant sneezing should be reason enough to plan a vet visit.

A Nasal Blockage

In some cases, your cat may sneeze simply to remove something that’s blocking their nasal passageway, be it mucous or a foreign body. That’s why single sneezes typically aren’t cause for concern.

When to Visit the Vet

If a serious health issue is causing this, it will likely come along with other symptoms, including:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Drooling
  • Diarrhea
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Eye swelling or discharge

Any of these symptoms could be cause for a physical examination. Even if constant sneezing over a period of days is the only symptom your cat is experiencing, you should consider calling your vet to ensure there are no underlying health issues.
