Who Wrote You Lift Me Up

Rihanna has praised Tems on Instagram following Friday’s release of the song “Lift Me Up.”

The Grammy Award winner, 34, and the Nigerian singer, 27, co-wrote the song alongside Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson and movie director Ryan Coogler for the Marvel film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The emotional ballad is meant to be a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, the late star of Black Panther, who died at the age of 43 from colon cancer in August 2020.

Part of the lyrics read: “Keep me in the warmth of your love when you depart / Keep me safe / Safe and sound / Lift me up / Hold me down / Keep me close.”

Prior to its release, Tems—whose real name is Temilade Openiyi—gave a statement about the track.

“After speaking with Ryan [Coogler, the movie’s director] and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life,” Tems said.

“I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them.”

Tems added: “Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”

On Friday, October 28, Tems took to Instagram to post about the new song. “Blessed to have written this song in honour of Chadwick Boseman and even more blessed to hear the baddest @badgalriri voice it to perfection,” she proudly captioned a photo of RiRi.

In the comments, Rihanna wrote, “It’s the pen for me. Love to you sistren.”

“Lift Me Up” marks the Barbados native’s return to music after six years, but since she released her last album, Anti, in 2016, the billionaire, real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty, has been keeping busy in other ways.

Rihanna expanded her Fenty Beauty empire and Savage X Fenty lingerie business. In May 2022, she became a mother with the arrival of a son, as yet unnamed publicly, whom she shares with boyfriend A$AP Rocky, also 34.

Rihanna has made a handful of appearances on other artists’ songs over the years such as N.E.R.D.’s “Lemon,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Loyalty’ and Future’s “Selfish.”

Despite a brief hiatus, it appears Rihanna is slowly making her way back into the spotlight. In September, the National Football League (NFL) confirmed the “We Found Love” singer would take the stage as the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show performer.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rihanna to the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show stage,” NFL’s Head of Music Seth Dudowsky said in a press release at the time.

“Rihanna is a once-in-a-generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career. We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance.”

While speaking with Vogue in April, Rihanna said she is now more relaxed about her future career plans.

“I’m looking at my next project completely differently from the way I had wanted to put it out before,” the Home actress told the magazine. “I think this way suits me better, a lot better. It’s authentic, it’ll be fun for me, and it takes a lot of the pressure off.”
