Who Killed Ricky Saxton

Ricky Saxton (top) was killed in 2013, and police are looking for Johnny Mack Brown (bottom) in his death.

Police have arrested two suspects in a case many people thought had gone cold.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrested Johnny Mack Brown, 36, on Tuesday after searching for him since Monday evening, in the November 2013 death of Ricky Saxton, a Yazoo City businessman.

Shotina Brown, 23, Brown’s wife, has also been arrested.

Johnny Mack Brown has been charged with capital murder, conspiracy to commit capital murder, armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and as a felon in possession of a firearm.

Shotina Brown has been charged with capital murder, conspiracy to commit capital murder, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Both were denied bond in their initial appearances on Tuesday.

Saxton, 57, was found shot in the head in a field in a remote part of Yazoo County. Described by friends as a hard-working and likeable businessman, Saxton left his office that morning after he took multiple calls about a car for sale. He drove to Benton, and that was the last time anyone saw him alive.

He was reported missing after he left in his wrecker on that call and did not return. Searchers scoured the area for Saxton and his wrecker, a white Ford F550 with his business’ name on the side.

A landowner in the area of Dale and Wildwood roads knew that Saxton had gone missing, and when he saw Saxton’s truck on his property, he called authorities.

Saxton’s body was found in high grass near the house by investigators who arrived on the scene following the landowner’s call. Officials said he had been shot and someone had gone through his belongings.

The charges stem from a 19-month long investigation into the homicide, Strain said. At this point, there is no public information on what led police to the Browns as suspects.

“This has been a difficult case,” MBI Director Lt. Col. Larry Waggoner said. “Our investigators have been doggedly pursuing leads and working tirelessly to find the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”

According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections: Brown has been in the prison system three times, starting with his sentence on April 1, 1996 out of Yazoo County for burglary (seven years) and grand larceny out of Yalobusha County (five years). Next he was sentenced on January 6, 1998 for burglary of a nonresidence (one year) and compounding crime (10 months), both in Yazoo County. Most recently, Brown was sentenced on December 3, 2012 for three counts of embezzlement (to serve five years probation with two counts running concurrently).
