The 44-year-old Georgia native has sported the signature hat since his start in the early 2000s and remained loyal by wearing it for all his major musical milestones. Featured in all nine of his album covers, award show speeches and of course, on stage while performing his hits in front of thousand, it’s clear Jason and his hat are like “Tattoos On This Town.”
“The cowboy hat is definitely a dead giveaway,” Jason admitted to Audacy’s Katie Neal.

Sure is, Jason! So where did it come from? Does it have significance? Were you born with it? We have questions!
“I needed a hat, so I went to a western store and I didn’t have much money, so I bought the cheapest hat they had,” Jason said of the first time he purchased one. “It was [like] a straw hat that had like, a brown band around it and I was like, ‘I haven’t seen anyone else wear a hat like that,’ and it was the only one I could really afford at the time. I think it was a round 40 bucks… Little did I know that would go on to be one of the signature things of my career.”
Clearly meant to be, as that $40 purchase has been a large part of Jason’s individuality as an artist and even helped him launch his own hat line with western apparel company, Resistol.
Loyal to the look, Jason admits he does go through a number of hats, but it may not be as many as you think…
“Over the course of a tour, I typically only go through maybe one or two,” Jason said. “I’ll get one and it’ll get good and worn in so I’ll kind of wear it for the tour and then maybe at the end of the tour that’s the one I kind of throw out in the crowd or somethin’. If we’re doing a photo shoot, [award show], or something like that, I’ll pull out a crispy one.”

Jason will be hitting the road, hat and all, with his Back In The Saddle Tour, kicking-off next month in Virginia Beach. It will be Jason’s first trek since the standstill of live shows last year as a result of COID-19.
“When all of us kind of went on a break last March, I don’t think any of us thought it would last this long,” Jason shared. “I think everybody’s excited just to get back to what is normal for us… I’ve always said, the stage is my playground.”
Along with his upcoming tour, Jason says is readying to release his yet-to-be-announced tenth studio album, which he teased is full of “surprises.”
“We’ve got some surprises for this album, some stuff that’s really fun,” Jason revealed. “Being our tenth album, we wanted to kind of do something a little different, a little special for this record. We came up with a couple cool ideas that I think are going to be fun!”
