Who Died In Haikyuu

Haikyuu!! by Haruichi Furudate may be considered as your standard sports anime—but with the way it’s written, even a non-anime watcher may get into anime (or at least this series) once they start watching this.

You can’t help but feel inspired and motivated, even though you’re nowhere near being an athlete nor a volleyball player. It’s very wholesome and heartwarming with a great mix of comedy in the bunch. Not to mention that the diverse characters in this series are all adorable in their own little ways—so that adds to the fun of the watching experience.

Haikyuu tells us the story of Shōyō Hinata, an aspiring volleyball player determined to achieve greatness despite his lack of height for the sport. Upon entering Karasuno High, he joins the school’s volleyball club where he further hones his skills and talent. Karasuno used to be one of the powerhouse schools, but now the volleyball team is dubbed the “Flightless Crows”.

Throughout the story, we get to witness the team’s journey towards getting their wings back, which couldn’t have been made possible without their individual hard work and the numerous opponents and friends that they’ve encountered along the way.

Due to the nature of the sports anime genre, there shouldn’t be anything intense or shocking to its plot, such as something that’s on the level of shōnen. So why do people keep asking if this one specific character dies? Does Daichi actually die?

Putting it simply, no, Daichi doesn’t die. It’s just a running joke within the Haikyuu fandom.

To be specific, the fans are referring to something that happened in the second season. During Episode 16 at Karasuno’s match with Wakutani, Tanaka and Daichi bump into each other after both divings for the ball. The collision was so strong that it injured Daichi’s face. Luckily, it was just a minor injury. After getting checked at the infirmary, he’s back up and running.

Even so, this prompted the emergence of tons of memes spread all around the internet. That’s probably why some new watchers are confused. Another joke also includes blaming Tanaka for Daichi’s death. (Tanaka, nice kill!)

For the ones who haven’t seen Haikyuu, at least you can now confirm that no one dies and that the anime is nowhere near depressing. In fact, it’s just going to provide you with a lot of serotonin.
