Maya Wiley is a civil rights lawyer who was born in Syracuse, New York, on January 2, 1964.

The 59-year-old earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Dartmouth University in 1986 and went on to pursue her Juris Doctorate at Columbia University School of Law.

Wiley has quite a successful career – holding positions like the chair of the NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), legal analyst for NBC News and MSNBC, counsel to the mayor, and university professor at The New School, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She believes that affordable housing and high-quality education should be prioritized. Wiley was formerly the chair of the CCRB and has relentlessly advocated for social justice and diversity.

Who is Maya Wiley’s husband?

Harlan Mandel, Maya Wiley’s husband, is a multimillionaire CEO of the Media Development Investment Fund, and his net worth is estimated to be over $2 million.

Mandel earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and Asian studies from the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequently went to Columbia University School of Law to get his Ph.D., where he met Wiley.

Wiley ran for mayor of New York City in the Democratic primary in 2021.

Former presidential candidates Julian Castro and Elizabeth Warren, as well as U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, backed Wiley in June 2021.

In an article she wrote for the Washington Post after her loss in July, she said: “I had a real shot at becoming the 110th mayor in a city that had elected 109 men, and only one of those a person of color.

“In an unprecedented race held during a pandemic, with more than 30 candidates, a shortened election cycle and less name recognition than other top contenders, I came in third.”
