Juan is a young man in Argentina who lives under the thumb of an authoritarian regime (imagine Big Brother from George Orwell’s 1984). He writes and mails a letter to Mariana, a woman he loves, at the start of the novel. However, he rapidly becomes concerned about what the censors would think of his letter’s contents.
All letters written and mailed in this society are inspected by the Censor’s Hidden Command, a bureaucratic department that looks for bombs, toxic powders, and secret messages, among other things. Anything might be a potential signal to the Censors that the letter’s sender or receiver is scheming against the government, and Juan is terrified that Mariana will be implicated in his message.

Valenzuela departed to avoid Juan’s destiny in ‘The Censors,’ when they built an authoritarian state and banned anything they disagreed with. “Ordinary citizens lived in terror, and many fled the country in fear for their lives,” (112). She didn’t want to self-censor her work for the regime’s sake, and she didn’t want them to do it for her.
