Why Is My Ring Camera Not Picking Up Motion

My Ring doorbell camera recently stopped sending me motion alerts and in general, was not properly detecting motion.

This was a weird occurrence, considering that Ring cameras have not had a major failure rate for me personally.

A few hours of research on the internet made me realize that quite a few users are having trouble with similar issues in general.

So I figured I make this one-stop troubleshooting article on how your can fix your Ring camera that is not properly detecting motion.

If your Ring camera is not detecting motion, check for obstacles and set up motion zones and frequency according to the line of sight of the camera. Check the internet connection, power cycle the device, and reset the camera to start afresh. If these don’t work, contact Ring support.

Check for Obstacles in the Viewfinder

Check for Obstacles in the Viewfinder

The most common culprit behind motion detection issues on smart security cameras is obstacles in the line of sight.

In the case of doorbell cameras such as Ring, the case can be even more common considering the constant activity around doors.

Motion detection in Ring cameras utilizes the heat signatures of the objects that are in motion in the line of sight, so anything that blocks the heat detection hinders the motion sensor.

Even something as simple as a transparent glass hood covering the Ring Doorbell camera or specks of dust can result in motion detection issues.

So make sure that the line of sight of the camera is devoid of any unwanted obstacles.

Here’s a video walkthrough from us to help you troubleshoot your Ring camera not detecting motion issue,

Ring camera not detection Motion: Troubleshooting guide

In the case of constantly moving objects in the line of sight, such as a flag or clothesline, you can add motion zones via the Ring app to preset detection zones.

This allows you to properly configure the areas where you want alerts to be pushed to your Ring app when motion is detected in said area.

This whitelisting process can result in the constantly motion-induced areas of the flag being ignored, thus resulting in the negation of the bombardment of notifications.

To set up motion zones for your Ring Doorbell camera via your Ring app, follow the steps given below:

  • Open the Ring app on your compatible smartphone, Make sure you are logged in to your Ring account and paired successfully with your Ring Doorbell.
  • From the homepage of the Ring app, tap on the three lines on the top left of the dashboard.
  • Tap on Devices.
  • Select your Ring device.
  • Tap on Motion Settings.
  • Tap on Camera Motion Zones.
  • Configure the area where you want the motion to be detected and save the configuration.

You can set up to three customizable motion zones for your Ring Doorbell camera.

While you are at it, you can also check and configure the motion detection frequency settings on your Ring app.

If for some reason, it is set to detect motion in a less frequent fashion, then that might be the root cause of your issues with motion detection.

To adjust and configure the motion detection frequency of your Ring camera via the Ring app, follow the steps below:

  • Open the Ring app on your compatible smartphone, Make sure you are logged in to your Ring account and paired successfully with your Ring Doorbell.
  • From the homepage of the Ring app, tap on the three lines on the top left of the dashboard.
  • Tap on Devices.
  • Select your Ring device.
  • Tap on Motion Settings.
  • Tap on Advanced Settings.
  • Tap on Motion Frequency.
  • Select your preferred setting from the available options: Frequently, Regularly, or Periodically.

It is best to leave this setting at Frequently if you are having trouble with motion detection in general.

Check Internet Connection

Check Your Internet Connection

Your internet connection acts as the primary communication channel for your Ring Doorbell camera to communicate with your Ring app.

This also includes the motion alerts that you have configured on your Ring app.

If the internet connection is spotty, there is a chance for the push notifications to fail, effectively rendering the whole feature useless.

So it is imperative that your internet connection is stable enough for the Ring Doorbell camera to communicate, and push notifications to your connected phone.

Make sure that the Ring Doorbell camera is well inside the coverage of your WiFi router range,

If the distance between your internet router and your Ring Doorbell camera is big, or if there are multiple obstacles between them, it can lead to a break in communication.

The same can be said for issues on most monitoring cams. SimpliSafe Cam not detecting motion is yet another case and point of this negligence.

Place the internet router as close to your Ring Doorbell as possible, and make sure that it gets a great signal from that location.

If you feel your coverage is apt, then the next thing to check is whether you are receiving internet properly.

For that, connect your internet to your smartphone or laptop, and check whether you are able to connect to the internet.

If not, check the status indications of your internet router and gauge the issue according to the indications.

Try rebooting your internet router. Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if the issue still persists.

Power Cycle the Ring Camera

A power cycle is often considered one of the most reliable steps you can take in order to get rid of any hardware bugs that clog your Ring camera.

In fact, it was one of the top steps to consider to fix a similar issue on competing products, with issues such as Blink cameras not detecting motion.

The Ring Floodlight keeps turning OFF and ON issue could also benefit from a power cycle test.

A power cycle is a reboot for the hardware of your Ring camera, ensuring that all charges within the system are reset.

This gets rid of any misbehaving charges that might have plagued the system thanks to one of the million operations the Ring camera performs every day.

Getting rid of this imbalance of charges means that the system gets evenly charged the next time it’s plugged in, ensuring optimal performance.

To perform a power cycle on your Ring doorbell camera, follow the steps given below:

  • Unplug the Ring doorbell camera from its power source.
  • Let the Ring doorbell camera sit idle in its powered-off state for about a minute.
  • Plug the Ring Doorbell camera back into its power source.

This wipes out all data from the device, including any bugs that might have been causing you motion detection issues, and completely refresh the device.

But do note that this data also includes all your configurations with your Ring camera, and you might have to start the setup process from scratch.
