Yesterday was the 112th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, now named Scouts BSA, and this week is Scouting Week. Several of the nation’s presidents have shown their support for the Boy Scouts, three served as Scout leaders, four were in the Cub Scouts as young boys, three were active in the actual Boy Scout program and one became an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting. Today’s trivia question asks which president was an Eagle Scout? Was it Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford or John F. Kennedy?

Theodore Roosevelt was an early advocate of Scouting and served on a troop committee and as a council commissioner. William Howard Taft was the first honorary president of the BSA. Seven U.S. presidents, starting with Harry Truman, have attended National Scouting jamborees, massive national campouts. The first president to be a Scout as a youth was John F. Kennedy, who reached the rank of Star. Gerald Ford is the only U.S. president to attain the rank of Eagle Scout.

Jimmy Carter was a Scoutmaster and Explorer advisor during the time his three sons were Scouts. His wife, Rosalynn, was also active as a Den Mother and Cubmaster. Through Carter’s influence, the BSA held a Scouting Environment Day in 1977. Franklin Roosevelt was president of the Greater New York Councils and was instrumental in the purchase of a New York area Scout camp. While serving as New York governor in 1930, he received the Silver Buffalo Award, presented for noteworthy and extraordinary service to youth on a national basis. Dwight Eisenhower served as a member, then president of the BSA National Executive Board before he was elected the nation’s president. Lyndon Johnson, as a member of an Exploring committee in Washington, DC, helped organize an Explorer post in the city, chartered by page boys of the House of Representatives. Ronald Reagan was active in Scouting as a council advisory board member and by chairing a special project and a membership drive. He was awarded Scouting’s Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service.

President Joe Biden joined the Boy Scout program in his teens as an Explorer Scout. Four U.S. presidents were Cub Scouts in their youth, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. Barack Obama was a Siaga, the equivalent of a Cub Scout in the national Scouting organization of Indonesia.

Gerald Ford continued to support Scouting though the years. In 1970 he received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, and in 1995. the Silver Buffalo Award. When Ford died in 2006, 400 Eagle Scouts took part in his funeral, some as an honor guard, others as ushers.
