How many types of coal are on the market?
The classification of coal will depend on heat generation, carbon content, and ash content. Each type of coal will have its own advantages and disadvantages, as follows:
- Coal: is black or brown-black coal. Coal is usually rarer than brown coal and has faint light. Coal is very brittle and when heated, it will have a temperature of 900 – 1100oC. At this temperature, coal will be formed into a solid and porous cup.
- Brown coal: is a thick or spongy mass, brown, rarely black completely and usually without light. Brown coal has low hardness, low heat generation capacity and high ash content. In addition, brown coal is also high in moisture and often has sulfur at 1-2%, a low level of metamorphosis. In particular, brown coal if left to the heap for a long time will be oxidized and crumbled into powder, at which time coal will generate heat itself and burn. It is because this property has made it difficult to preserve brown coal. Also due to the low heat generation ability, brown coal is rarely transported far away. Usually only used in thermal power, used in daily life or turning coal into gaseous fuel.
- Thin coal: this coal will not be completely sintered, not a cup. Which will take the form of powder with the highest level of metamorphism with anthracite? Thin coal is used primarily for fuel in boilers and in thermal power plants.
- Gas coal: is a type of coal that can produce a large amount of light gas, which is used similarly to thin coal.
- Anthracite: this type of coal is black and has iridescence, sometimes with good light. Anthracite has no flame, is difficult to burn and requires strong ventilation to be able to burn. However, this type of coal is capable of producing a greater amount of heat than other types of coal, so it is mainly used for high-temperature fuel. Because of the non-flammable nature of anthracite, it can be piled up for a long time, with high mechanical strength, not crumbling during transport.
With the above information, hope you have got the answer to the question of how many types of coal.

Current situation of coal exploitation and consumption
In general, coal mining output will change and vary from time to time, as well as between regions and countries. However, no matter how changing and different. Then coal mining output also tends to increase in absolute quantity.
Over the past 50 years, the average growth rate of coal production is 5.4% / year. However, since the 1990s, this growth has decreased to only 1.5% per year.
Although coal mining causes many problems especially affecting the environment. However, it is not so that the demand for use and exploitation decreases.
Currently, the leading coal-producing countries are China, the United States, India, Australia, Russia. With output accounts for two-thirds of the world’s total coal output.
In Vietnam, coal has many types with large reserves and concentrates mainly on Quang Ninh (accounting for 90% of the country’s coal reserves). Our country’s coal reserves are estimated to fall to more than 6.6 billion tons. In which, the exploitable reserve is about 3.6 billion tons. With this figure, Vietnam has topped Southeast Asia in coal reserves and production.
