Why Are Californians Moving To Florida

A growing number of Californians are leaving the state and choosing to move to the opposite side of the country, both geographically and ideologically.

For several years now, Florida has experienced a massive migration from colder states like New York and New Jersey, with many Americans wishing to relocate to a place where the sun shines an average of 230 days a year, taxes are low, and the cost of living is relatively affordable.

But while Florida is overall the number one state in the country that Americans want to move, when it comes to relocating, Californians have historically preferred Texas over the Sunshine State.

This trend might be changing, as the latest data on state-to-state migration released on Thursday show that the number of Californians choosing Texas as their new home dropped slightly last year, while more decided to move to Florida and Arizona, as the Associated Press reported.

While 107,000 Californians moved to Texas in 2021, only 102,000 moved in 2022, a drop which can be linked to the growing cost of housing in the Lone Star State due to the influx of people moving and looking for a place to stay.

But what Texas lost, Florida gained. According to the latest data, more than 50,000 Californians moved to Florida last year, compared to 37,000 in 2021.

These numbers speak of a recent, wider trend of residents of blue states moving to red states because of the lower cost of living, a pro-business attitude, and sometimes even political ideology, despite—or possibly, because of—the increased polarization of American society.

States like Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina have become the fastest-growing in the country over the 13 years, in a trend that has drastically accelerated during the pandemic.

But the numbers don’t necessarily speak of a victory for Florida over its biggest ideological, political rival California. The population growth in red states is focusing on what are often blue cities, like Austin, Houston, Miami, Tampa, Phoenix and Nashville.

What’s sure is that the mass exodus out of California represents a dramatic change for the Golden State, which has seen more than 343,000 people leave for another state last year and has had a net loss of more than 113,000 residents in the same year.

But it’s also a direct consequence of how expensive it has become to live in California, the second most costly state after Hawaii.

An ongoing housing shortage in the state has led to an increase in homelessness and a spike in home prices which has squeezed many aspiring homebuyers out of the market and possibly led them to move elsewhere.

Things aren’t much better in Florida, where the cost of home insurance premiums have skyrocketed and is leading some to go without insurance coverage entirely.

In fact, counterintuitively, last year Florida was both the state with the highest number of Americans that want to move there, and the one with the highest number of residents trying to leave, according to a SelfStorage report.
