A mid-rise apartment building is typically a building that has more than four (4) but less than twelve (12) floors.

If the building has more than 12 floors, it is typically considered a high-rise. If it is lower than four floors, it is considered a low-rise or garden-style apartment.

Mid-rise apartments can be found in virtually every major city in the U.S. They are often close to downtown urban city centers and are particularly popular in the more densely populated suburbs where land costs are still high, density is permitted, but no skyscrapers or high rises are allowed.

Since there are more than four floors in a mid-rise apartment building, you will almost always find an elevator for added convenience. While not all, many mid-rise apartments contain balconies on each apartment. Some mid-rises are mixed-use with retail shops on the lower level.
