Of all the consumable items used by the early education industry, the latest item to skyrocket in demand and price by far is powder free vinyl gloves. Due to vinyl gloves being mainly used as a medical tool the pricing and availability of this product has been impacted heavily by COVID-19 around the world, and not for the better.
Whereas vinyl gloves national RRP used to average $5.70 per box of 100 gloves the average price per box has been slowly creeping up as the pandemic in other countries has called for higher demand of gloves in hospitals and testing clinics with the average price now being pushed over $15.00 per box.

The Childcare and Early Education industry has 3 main reasons for using gloves day to day. Cleaning, food preparation and nappy change/nose wiping. With nappy changing/nose wiping using two thirds of total glove requirements we need to find an alternative to reduce the massive impact on centre budget that at this stage has no signs of reducing to a more sensible market rate.
Centres would be familiar with polyethylene gloves as the thin and loose fitting gloves used when serving food. These gloves are only really meant as a thin barrier for hygiene reasons between the food and the staff serving the food, these gloves whilst cheap are not a suitable replacement for vinyl gloves in the main three uses as described above.

Cast Polyethylene glove or CPE gloves are similar to a normal PE glove but are thicker, grip better and are less than one third the price of vinyl gloves as of October 2020. Childcare Cleaning Supplies has tested CPE gloves in some of our larger clients and the feedback is that as a cost reduction alternative they work perfectly for lightly soiled nappies and nose wiping. For heavily soiled nappies using a vinyl glove is required as well as cleaning and of course blue gloves for food prep.
Should you wish to adopt this product in your own centre there is some re-education and training required with staff who might not understand the cost savings involved with using CPE gloves however we firmly believe that this policy can be used well after the price of vinyl gloves comes back down as a strategic cost saving endeavor.
