What To Send Someone When Their Dog Dies

Losing a pet has got to be one of life’s high-ranking heartaches. They’re family after all, and when you’re grieving a family member, you’re sure to go through the whole mourning process. Given that, when you’re preparing to console someone experiencing the loss of a furry friend, it’s crucial to be just as sensitive as you would when reaching out to somebody grieving a human.

Jennifer Breslow, an NYC-based pet loss therapist, says that often times society belittles pet mourning since it’s focused on an animal. “People feel they have to hide their feelings around pet loss,” she says. “There’s this shame that they cried more about their cat than they did over a human.

One of the best things you can to do offer support is be with them and acknowledge the loss, explains Breslow. And it’s a good idea to assure your people that they get to feel whatever emotion is coming up for them. So if you’re searching for just the right thing to say to someone who’s going through this hard time, your hunt ends here. We’ve rounded up a few potential jump-off points for your check-ins and well-wishes because lending a few kind words is more valuable than you think.

What to avoid saying to someone who’s lost a pet

Downplaying and minimizing the situation is definitely not the move. “You shouldn’t say, ‘Oh it’s just a cat,’ because it is a significant loss for a lot of people,” says Breslow. “And don’t ask, ‘Oh are you going to get another one?’ either.” This kinda insinuates that the pet can be replaced. And lastly, don’t reference their other pets with a message like, “Oh at least you still have so and so.” These are pretty insensitive remarks, and you want to be extra careful with your loved one’s feelings during this time.
